The silence after the line breaks does not last long enough to settle, because hesitation is not the same thing as retreat, and I feel that distinction sink into my bones even as the room holds its breath.
The lead officer’s shoulders remain squared, but his eyes keep flicking toward the doors, and that alone tells me everything I need to know about how much time we have left, which is not much.
“They’re not backing off,” Ben murmurs beside me, voice low and steady, and I nod because my wolf has already reached the same conclusion, instincts pressed tight against my skin like they are bracing for impact.
The first warning comes without sound.
A shift in air pressure.
A change in posture.
The operations floor feels suddenly smaller, walls closing in as if the building itself is listening, and then the doors at the far end slide open again, smoother this time, quieter, and the team that steps through does not hesitate.
They are not familiar faces.
They move as a unit.
Their insignia is newer, cleaner, and the way they scan the room tells me they were briefed with one objective and no room for interpretation.
“This is the extraction unit,” Sally says under her breath, and I can hear the strain she is holding back. “They didn’t come to negotiate.”
The lead officer steps forward immediately, placing himself between us and the incoming team, and I feel a surge of something sharp and fierce move through my chest, because he knows exactly what this costs him.
“We’re holding position,” he says firmly. “This area is under my command.”
The extraction unit leader does not slow. “That is no longer the case,” he replies, his voice calm in a way that strips the words of any pretense of courtesy. “Step aside.”
“No,” the lead officer answers.
The word hangs in the air, heavy and dangerous.
The extraction leader’s gaze slides past him and lands on Ben, assessing, cataloguing, already deciding how much resistance he expects.
“Ben,” he says, using his name like a claim. “You are to come with us now. This is for your protection.”
My wolf snarls silently, every instinct screaming at the lie wrapped neatly inside that sentence.
“I’m not going anywhere,” Ben replies evenly, his posture open but unyielding.
The extraction leader’s eyes flick to me then, calculating, and I see the shift immediately as the problem expands to include obstruction.
