“You do not want this to escalate,” I say, my voice low and controlled even as heat crawls up my spine. “Because once it does, you will not be able to call it enforcement.”

The extraction leader recovers quickly, teeth flashing in a tight smile that holds no humor. “You are interfering with a lawful order.”

“I am preventing an unlawful one,” I reply.

Behind him, one of the extraction officers falters, weight shifting as his eyes flick to the lead officer who is being restrained, then to the others in the room who are no longer neutral observers.

Ben’s hand brushes my back once, grounding and steady. “They’re going to force it,” he murmurs.
