I exhale slowly.
“They’re closing the triangle,” I murmur.
“Yes.”
We stand across the desk from each other, tension not between us but around us, like air charged before a storm.
“They’re not trying to breach,” he continues. “They’re tracking how fast we redistribute.”
“And whether we overcommit,” I add.
The bond pulses in agreement.
“If we pull too many to the south,” he says, “they hit north again.”
“And if we split evenly, they watch for delay.”
Silence settles heavy between us.
“They want us stretched,” I say finally. “Or distracted.”
His gaze sharpens slightly. “Distracted how.”
“By internal strain,” I reply.
Because if attention fractures inward, response outward slows.
A knock interrupts us before we can say more, sharp and urgent.
“Enter,” Landon calls.
Layla steps in, expression controlled but tight.
“There was an incident in the eastern residential corridor,” she says. “A small altercation.”
My spine straightens instantly.
“Between who?” I ask.
“Two mid rank warriors. Argument escalated quickly. Physical contact before separation.”
“Over what?” Landon asks.
“Patrol assignments.”
Of course.
I move past her without hesitation.
The corridor is crowded when we arrive, wolves lingering under the guise of concern but watching closely. The two involved stand several feet apart now, breathing hard but contained, minor cuts on knuckles and cheekbones.
“What happened,” I ask evenly.
“He questioned my reassignment,” one says, jaw tight.
“You questioned protocol,” the other counters.
Voices rise slightly, and I lift a hand.
“Enough.”
The word lands firm without needing volume.
“You are both aware that reassignment authority rests with command,” I continue. “Not speculation.”
Silence follows.
“This is what they want,” I add quietly, letting my gaze sweep the corridor. “Division.”
A ripple moves through the watching wolves.
“External forces are testing our borders,” I continue. “Do not assist them by testing each other.”
The words are deliberate, pointed but not accusatory.
The two warriors lower their gazes slightly, tension draining in increments.
“Return to duty,” I say. “Separate assignments.”
