The Pack's Hacker (by Cooper) novel Chapter 406

Hacker

I was secretly thrilled that Wendy chose to sleep outside with me last night. I gave her the option to use the pull-down cots that are attached to the sides of the van. They are terribly uncomfortable, but if you’re tired enough, it doesn’t matter. However, she said she feels safer when she’s close to me, which made me feel like the fucking king of the world. Then, she’d crawled into my sleeping bag and fallen into a deep sleep in my arms. Best fucking job ever!

I knew her family had asked about her, so I waited for everyone to fall asleep before talking to Piper. Since she’s only here for a day, I know she’ll be reporting back to them on how Wendy is doing.

In truth, Wendy’s biggest problem is Wendy. The attack two years ago impacted her confidence in ways that I’m only just starting to realize. She second guesses herself in everything and doesn’t recognize the value she brings to the group. I know she gets frustrated with her family’s protectiveness, but the truth is, most people would be thrilled to have so many people that care about them in this world. Besides that, Wendy is still underage, so of course her family of Alphas are going to be worried about her. 1

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I realize that if she and I truly are mates, that her family will pass the torch of her protection to me with very high expectations that I never, ever let anything happen to her. I don’t find that intimidating, since I would never let anything happen to Wendy, not now, not ever. But I can see how that would be extremely intimidating to others. I just hope that Yana and Yvonne’s mates can handle that kind of pressure.

Before we joined the others, we set up alarms to monitor the group while we sleep. Having worked with Raptor before, I knew he would put someone on watch anyway, that’s just how he is. But my alarms are good enough that he didn’t need to do that.

In the morning, we’d all gotten ready, had a sucky breakfast, and then it was time to go to work. I had a hunch that Stellan would go south, since that’s where Yorick and Cyra’s pack is, so I had Wendy monitor Raptor and Siren who went north.

Wendy impressed me yet again. She identified two predators in their area that we had to warn them about. They were able to steer clear of them and avoid an unnecessary fight.

It was when I heard the howl of the hunt that things got tense. Intrigue told us that Fallon caught Stellan’s scent and was following his trail. While I monitored their location, I was already looking to see where she was going in relation to where Yorick and Cyra’s pack was located.

“What do I do?” Wendy asks me.

“Get Raptor and Siren back here safely,” I say, watching my monitors as Fallon races after Stellan’s scent.

“Shit,” I murmur to myself, tracking the direction she’s going versus where the northern part of Yorick and Cyra’s pack is located.

“What? What’s going on?” Wendy asks.

“It looks like Stellan is going home,” I growl, just as Intrigue calls out for assistance. When I ask if Fallon is getting the scent in the straight line she’s starting running, I know that’s where he’s headed.

“I’m calling Yorick now,” I say, grabbing my phone and looking to see how far out Raptor is.

“Wendy, get up front and drive to Yorick’s pack. Raptor, we’re heading out. It looks like you’re ten minutes behind us,” I say in the comm as my cell phone rings.

“Don’t leave without us, Hacker. You’re not part of Alpha Squad.”

“No, but I know his scent too. I’m calling Tracker after Yorick,” I say, cutting off the comm when Yorick answers. “Hacker?”

“Stellan is on his way to your pack, Yorick. He’s headed back to his old pack. You need to be ready.”

“We’ll be ready,” he snarls, then hangs up.

I call Tracker as Wendy starts the van. I slide the door closed and tell her to go. I know Raptor won’t be happy about it, but we need to catch Stellan.

“Hacker?” Tracker answers on our group call.

“We have a lead on Stellan. I need you to track him,” I say, giving her his coordinates.

“What’s going on?” Hijack asks, connecting to our team call.

“We’ve got a lead on Stellan. I need you to hack into the security line we put in Striker and Cyra’s pack and see if he crosses into their territory. Striker has been notified,” I say, using Yorick’s code name.

“Who else from C-Squad is in their pack?” Hijack asks.

“Saber and Viper,” Tracker tells him.

“Where is Sphinx?” Hijack asks.

“I’m here. I’m driving us to Yorick’s pack.”

“Striker’s pack,” I correct her.

On our ops, we have to use codenames in case anyone hacks into our communications. Hijack is great at monitoring them and keeping them coded, but there’s always the possibility that we could get hacked.

“Raptor and Siren pulling out,” Raptor says, letting me know they’ve gotten into the other van and are following behind us. “Copy, Alpha Leader,” I say into the comm.

“Anything?” he asks.

“Negative. Tracker and Hijack are monitoring Striker’s pack.”

“Saber,” I hear Hijack say.

“What have you got for me, Hijack?” she asks.
