“How can three people just disappear, Jude?” Wendy asks me. Now, when it’s just us on a call or we’re together, we use our real names. I love hearing her say my name.
“Usually, when it’s shifters, they disappear in the human world. However, I’m beginning to wonder if these three haven’t found a vacant pack somewhere to hole up in,” I say.
It isn’t just the two of us who are frustrated. Tracker and Hijack are frustrated too. Wendy is right. These three seem to have disappeared into thin air. When I talked to Hijack and Tracker earlier, we all agreed that they have to be someplace without technology. That’s where the idea of a vacant pack came from. There are several of them around, packs that had no one to take them over. With two Alphas, they would be able to find food easily, but personally, I don’t see Justine roughing it for long.
“If they’re in a vacant pack, how will we find them? Didn’t the elite squads already search the vacant packs?”
“Not yet. We assumed they were in a human city. They’ve been searching cities, but after I met with the others today, we all think it has to be a vacant pack.”
“Why wasn’t I on the call?” Wendy asks, sounding hurt.
I turn and look at the camera. “Because you were in class, getting ready for your finals in a few weeks.”
“I can’t wait until I’m done with school and can work with the team full-time.”
Honestly, I can’t wait for that day either. That and her eighteenth birthday, and of course, her meeting my family.
“Did you ever talk to your mother about coming to visit my family?” | ask her.
She smiles that gorgeous, Wendy smile. “Yes, I did. She talked to dad, and she got him to agree that she would speak with your mother to make sure it’s okay. I’m sure dad will want to talk with you before we go, though.”
“I’m happy to settle any worries or fears Alpha Warren has about you coming with me. My mother is very excited to meet you,” I say, thinking of the last call I had with her.
Since coming to the Academy, I haven’t brought anyone home to meet her. I’m as close with my family as Wendy is with hers, so I told my mother that I’m hoping Wendy is my mate and that Saggio is already feeling the pull to Wendy and Dasha.
My mother squealed so loud I was afraid that she was going to burst my eardrums.
Now I’m supposed to find out all of Wendy’s favorite dishes. My mother is planning tours and outings every day to show her the pack and the surrounding area, as if we might decide to move back there after Wendy graduates. I guess it’s possible, but those conversationswill have to wait until know for sure that she’s my mate.
The next few months are going to be very busy.
‘Im excited to meet her too,” she says, but like always, I can see the worry on her face.
“She’s going to love you, Wendy.”
“I hope so.”
“What’s not to love?” I ask, wondering why she thinks my mother wouldn’t like her.
“What if she thinks that I’m too immature for you.”
“You’re three years younger than I am, Wen. You’re a brilliant young woman. She’ll see that immediately. Plus, both my parents are used to being around my sisters.
They still live at home, remember?”
“I hope they like me, too,” she says.
“My entire family will love you. Trust me.”
She shrugs. “Anyway, how are we going to find these assholes if they’re in vacant pack lands unless we send the elite teams out after them again?”
“I’ve been thinking about that. You’ve been around pregnant she-wolves more than I have since your mother and sister are doctors. When will Justine need to start seeing a doctor for her pup?”
I watch as she looks thoughtful. “How far along do wethink she is?”
“One to two months. Early enough that she wasn’t showing.
“Depending on how much Alpha Prick cares about the pup, he’d want to know if the pup is healthy and if it’s a boy. I’d say that she’d need to find a doctor soon. And it would have to be a shifter doctor, since a human doctor wouldn’t understand how to care for a pup given the differences in our gestation periods,” she says.
