The Perfect Wife's Perfect Revenge novel Chapter 997

Layne didn't show an ounce of anger. He simply carried Maeve into the bedroom, set her down, and then turned to grab a spare blanket from the closet.

Maeve watched him, thoroughly confused. "Where are you going?"

Why did he need a blanket?

"To sleep in the study," Layne replied evenly.

Maeve sat frozen. In the two years they had lived together, they had never slept in separate rooms. Layne noticed she didn't offer a single word to stop him. He felt a sharp pang of disappointment, but he respected her silence and walked out.

The bedroom door clicked shut, leaving Maeve reeling in shock. When her brain finally caught up, she muttered to the empty room, "Why?"

Why did he just walk away and leave her alone? Just like Quinton had. All men really were exactly the same.

For the first time in months, Maeve suffered from acute insomnia. By the early hours of the morning, she was still tossing and turning. She had counted thousands of sheep, but her mind refused to shut down.

Finally, she threw off the covers and padded down the hall to find him. It was pitch black outside, but the soft corridor lights illuminated her path. The ambient glow of the estate was beautiful, accompanied by the faint chirping of crickets.

Maeve had zero interest in the scenery. By now, even the most diligent staff members were fast asleep.

She reached the study on the second floor. The light beneath the door was still glowing brightly.

Maeve pressed her ear against the solid wood. Barely two seconds passed before a deep voice drifted through the barrier.

"Come in. Why are you sneaking around out there?"

Maeve stuck her tongue out sheepishly before pushing the door open.

Layne was seated at his massive desk, staring intently at his computer screens. Seeing her walk in, he dimmed the monitors and gave her his full attention.

"Still awake?"
