The Perfect Wife's Perfect Revenge novel Chapter 998

Layne looked at her with utter helplessness. In all their time together, she had never been this clingy. He wanted to put on a stern face, but the thought of upsetting her stopped him dead in his tracks.

"How about you sleep on the sofa in here and wait for me, hmm?" he offered softly.

If he didn't patch the system vulnerability tonight, the company's entire network would crash by morning, costing them hundreds of millions of dollars. He refused to let the board think that with his uncle gone, a useless trust-fund baby had taken the reins.

Realizing that no amount of begging would pull him away from his screens, Maeve's carefully honed accommodating persona instinctively kicked in.

"Okay. Just don't stay up too late."

She curled up on the leather sofa, pulling the blanket he had brought in earlier tightly around herself. With only her large, sleepy eyes peeking over the fabric, she watched him work.

Layne had zero attention to spare. His absolute focus was locked on the cascading lines of code.

Maeve didn't fully understand it, but simply having him in the same room anchored her.

Back in the massive bedroom alone, anxiety had kept her wide awake, but here, wrapped in the quiet hum of his concentration, her eyelids grew incredibly heavy.

She had no idea when she actually drifted off. When she finally opened her eyes, she was back in the master bed.

She was still wrapped in the blanket from the study. Panic surged through her, and she practically vaulted out of the mattress.

Ignoring her bare feet, she sprinted toward the door.

She barreled out of the room just as Layne was walking in. If he hadn't possessed lightning-fast reflexes, catching her by the waist and pulling her firmly against his chest, they would have violently collided.

"What's wrong?"

Layne frowned, deeply unsettled by her frantic state. He held her tight and guided her back to the edge of the bed.

"I thought you left," she admitted, her voice thick with emotion.
