Chapter 107

Daniel’s POV-

“Last night, we lost a great Knight, a great president, and a great father. We lost so many. Today we mourn those we lost, and tomorrow we hunt down the bastard who escaped. Carnage paralysed Vargas. I witnessed it, he severed his spinal cord to save Queenie. With the death of my father, the president of the mother chapter of the Phoenix Knights, I will step up and be the new president, the new Prez. In a few days, we will hold the challenge. Anyone who dares to challenge my birth rite to be president, can challenge me then. Just remember that this challenge is a fight to the death, and I would hate to have to kill any of you, but I will if you challenge me. Today, we bury our dead, or make arrangements for their funerals. My father will be buried tonight with setting sun. As per his request, he will be buried in the family mausoleum in the graveyard on our club’s land. We will ride with his coffin in a hearse at 5pm, we will ride through the city, and come back here to the graveyard, where we will bury him. If any of our other fallen relatives wish for them to be buried today, then we can arrange that. Doctor Allison Cook is under club protection for her efforts in trying to keep my father alive and for what she endured. That doesn’t mean hound her. She has already contacted the police to say that she isn’t missing, but needed to leave the city for a while for personal reasons and will be back in a few days. Does anyone have anything else to add?” Mike’s booming voice for a split second made me think his dad was up there speaking to us all, but it was just Mike.

Doc stood up and said, “A while ago, your father and I spoke about hiring a female doctor, to see more of the women’s specific needs. I was never comfortable dealing with the everyday medical needs of the old ladies. I specialize more in emergency medicine. Doctor Cook is a gynecologist. If she wants to stay here, then maybe we could consider offering her a position here, as a gynecologist. I bet a lot of the Knights here would feel better knowing their old ladies get to see a doctor on club lands whenever they need to, rather than having to book appointments and wait.”

“Let her take a few days, and we can see how she feels about it. She needs time to heal and deal with what she has been through. All those in favor of having a female doctor on the payroll to deal with the old ladies at the club, say I,” Mike responded.

A course of “I’s” sounded. Olivia and I had both called out “I.”

Mike nodded, “Anyone else?”

Claw stood up and cleared his throat, “The Iron Wolves lost one of our own last night. After the funerals here, we need to take him home, so he can be buried. We will still do what we can to help you locate and take Vargas down. It was his men that killed our people.”

Mike nodded, “Thank you, Claw. For everything. From my club to yours, I offer my condolences for your loss. If there is ever anything we can do, please don’t hesitate to call.”

This pattern continued with a few more chapters. The Portland, Boston and Colorado chapters all lost a Knight. Mike’s dad was not the only man we lost. We lost three other Knights, including Flex.

Mike ended church and approached Olivia and me. Olivia pulled away from me, and wrapped her arms around Mike. He wrapped his arms around her. It took everything in me to not act possessively. Olivia was there in Mike’s dad’s last moments. She is a very caring person, so she would instinctively want to hug someone she considered family, to make sure they were okay, especially after the loss they had endured.

“I am sorry,” she whispered over and over again.

“Queenie, it’s okay. Doctor Cook told Doc that you tried everything you could to keep him alive with limited

supplies and medical training, all while standing between him and further harm. You did everything you could, and that means a lot to me. But…” Mike sighed, pulling away from her.

I stepped closer, slightly worried about the “but” he had said. Mike continued, “My dad had cancer, stage 4 bone cancer, and he didn’t have long to Nye. He wrote a letter explaining why he paired you up with him. He knew this was going to be dangerous, and he wanted to be in a position to throw himself in harms way to protect you. So, that a dying man would die, and not the healthy men of our club. He wanted to sacrifice himself, if it meant protecting you and everyone else. He never told Katie or me about the cancer he had.”

The revelation stunned me, but the decision to separate me from Olivia made sense. It was so that no one did anything stupid to try and save her, other than a man already dying. I didn’t like it one bit, and I wouldn’t have agreed to it. None of us would have.

Olivia nodded, “Speaking of Katie. How is she handling all of this?”

“She is crying in her locked bedroom. She hasn’t eaten since last night. She has asked me to send her away. Dad always said if things got too bad for her to stay here, then he would send her to a boarding school in Virginia. One for the extremely rich. I have considered it. I know it’s not necessarily dangerous anymore, but I can’t keep her here if she doesn’t want to be here,” he sighed.

“Mike, you and Katie have lost both your parents to this life, to this world that we live in. I get it’s the life we signed up for, and our parents did too. Katie was always isolated from this world by your father and you to protect her. There is a part of her that belongs to this world, there always will be, but she is good and sensitive, not the best traits to have in this world,” I said,

Mike nodded, “I know. I will talk with her in a minute, try and get her to eat something.”

“Why don’t you let me try? Woman to woman,” Olivia said.

“Thank you, Queenie,” Mike smiled solemnly, before sighing, “I need to go and get things ready for tonight, and speak with the other presidents.”

I nodded, and watched him leave, as Olivia stepped towards me wrapping her arms around me. We headed together to find Gold and my parents. We asked them to come with us somewhere private. We went to my dad’s office. “So, what did you two need to speak with us about in private?” Dad asked.

“This better not be a pregnancy announcement,” Gold growled.

I chuckled, “If I had knocked up my old lady, we all know I wouldn’t be able to keep that in ever.”

Gold’s eyes narrowed, not pleased with that comment. Olivia shook her head, “I am not pregnant. But we decided that we wanted to have our wedding the weekend after we graduate from high school. After last night and how close I came to being taken away from Daniel, for god knows how long, I don’t want to wait I want to be tied to Daniel.”

“Are you sure?” Gold asked.

Olivia and I exchanged glances and smiles, before looking at them and nodding. “We wanted to tell you all in private. With the losses we sustained yesterday, we didn’t want to tell everyone. But we know we need to start planning it, and we wanted you to know so you could be involved.”
