Chapter 109

I saw a funeral procession for one of the Knights before, a couple of years back, and it brought tears to my eyes then. I never imagined that I would be here, that I would be a part of the funeral procession escorting our fallen President to his final resting place, before the phoenixes rise to take him to the streets of heaven, where he can ride forever.
As the future treasurer, I should be riding my own bike, but given what had happened to me and I am Daniel’s old lady, I was going to be allowed to ride on the back of Daniel’s bike. They were giving me a leeway because I am still new to this world, well at least compared to the rest of them. Not that I mind, I love riding backpack on Daniel’s bike. I had my arms firmly wrapped around his waist, as we rode in the procession.
We rode through the streets of the city at a slow speed. The police had been called into blocks of streets so we would have a route to ride, and wouldn’t have road rage incidents, because some idiot got too impatient and tried to push through the funeral procession. Apparently, it has happened before, and that driver got put in hospital.
Many were crying, and laying down flowers. Daniel could feel the slight tremble in my body. I was crying silently, and he could tell without looking at me. He placed one of his hands on mine and rubbed it soothingly. He was trying to comfort me. In some ways, I felt like I should be the one to comfort him. I did not know Mike’s dad as long as Daniel did, but I felt guilty like I couldn’t protect my president. I was sad because we lost him, but I also blamed myself. I know Daniel could see how I was feeling.
None of us were wearing helmets because we were moving so slow. I kept hiding my face at Daniel’s back. That was until we came to the next turning and/slowed to a near stop. I felt a hand come to rest on my shoulder. I looked up and saw my dad. He flashed a tight-lipped smile at me, before leaning over and pulling me into his arms. Daniel glanced back but even as everyone began to move around us, he didn’t move. He let my dad and me have a moment.
Dad pulled away and whispered, “You did everything you could to keep him alive, we all know that.”
I nodded, “I know, but I have never lost anyone like this, not someone I was starting to care for.”
Daniel twisted his body, placing his hand on the back of my head, resting his forehead pi mine. “You are safe now, and I am not letting you out of my sight for long. You have no idea how proud we all are of how you handled what happened. Now, hold on to ine until we get to the graveyard,” he whispered.
I nodded, and he pressed a kiss to my forehead, before turning back around and continuing to ride in the procession. It was about another thirty minutes of zigzagging our way through the streets of the city, before we headed to the graveyard.
Once there, my dad, Dragon, and six other dear friends of Mike’s dad carried his coffin. Mike walked behind the coffin with Katie beside him. Beth walked in with Daniel and me, just behind Mike and Katie. Then everyone else follows behind us to the mausoleum where Mike’s family are always buried.
Mike had to say something after Jesus. He is our club’s priest. He officiates weddings, funerals and christenings at the club. He got that name because he was always the religious one, and he looked like Jesus. He could put off playing Jesus in movies. He is a good guy, doesn’t believe in violence of any sort, but if he lets out his inner demons, he is a monster. Well, so I have been told, but I have not seen that side

I stood beside Daniel, his arm firmly wrapped around my waist, while my dad moved to stand beside me taking my hand, after he set the coffin down. Jesus got up to say a few words, and while he did, I zoned out of what was being said, trying to keep my emotions in check. I pre-warned Daniel and Dad that I mig zone out to stop myself from crying my eyes out. They understood that. With so many bikers from different chapters of the Knight and from other clubs, they understood that I didn’t want to be seen as to emotional, even though this was an emotional situation.
I focused entirely on the design of the coffin. It was a carved wooden coffin, with the Phoenix Knight emblem carved on to it. The wood had to be oak, at least that is what I am guessing. Focusing on the details and designs of the coffin helped me concentrate on controlling my emotions.
Katie was full on wailing, she had been clinging to Mike, but when he had to go up and say a few words, Beth had to pull Katie off of Mike so he could go up. In moments like this, I could see why Mike and his father shielded Katie from this side of the world. The risk of death and the danger was all too great in the world we live in. They didn’t want it to be the life she had. I could understand that, because I never thoug I would be here. It is where I belong, and I would not change it for the world, but it is not where I thought would be.
“Today, we lay my father, our president, to rest. He fought to the end, to protect our own. He protected us and cared for us all greatly. We are all his family, not just Katie and I. He loved you all like you were his own family. He was the greatest man I ever knew. Our greatest president. I hope I can live up to his standards and do him proud. I know he trusted me to lead you all, and I will sacrifice everything I am to make him proud. Your work is done, Knight, may you rise with the Phoenixes,” Mike said, placing his hand on the coffin at the end of what he said.
Mike returned to his sister, who threw herself into his arms. He pulled back enough to get his sister to look at him, and then whispered, “Did you want to say goodbye?”
“NO! No, I’m not ready to say goodbye,” Katie cried, shoving Mike away from her and rushing forward to
the coffin.
She wrapped her arms around the coffin as best she could, as she sobbed loudly. You could see the pained expression of everyone around, at seeing Katie so grief-stricken. Mike nodded for those who needed to put the coffin in the mausoleum, as he wrapped his arms around his sister and pried her away from the coffin. That scene final broke me. Daniel noticed the tears falling before I did, so he pulled me against his chest, wrapping one arm around my back and sliding his other hand into my hair, holding my head against his chest.
Everyone watched the coffin be placed into the mausoleum in silence, aside from Katie’s very loud wailing. This destroyed her. As for me, I am barely hanging on in there. A part of me feels like I am the cause of this. Everyone will tell me it is not my fault and that I did everything that I could to keep him alive But the doubt is still there
The rest of the funeral blurred by. The wake was full of quiet conversations and reminiscing over fond memories. Daniel could see I was getting tired, so he took me to bed earlier than most. It was one of the things that I loved about him. The moment he sees I need anything, he makes sure I get it. He carried me to bed, helped me change into one of his T-shirts and then tucked me into bed. When I tried to argue that I was fine and could stay longer, he raised a single eyebrow at me, a look that warned me not to challenge him on this.
