149 Chapter 149 Lord Jacob Has Fallen

Blanche’s POV 1

I had no idea what Vincent was planning, but I didn’t push him for answers.

Blood kept seeping from his wound, and I needed to stop it quickly.

Once I finished bandaging him up, I said, There. Just remember to change the dressing regularly.

I stuffed my supplies back into my bag.

When I glanced up, Vincent was still staring at me, so I met his gaze directly.

My steady look seemed to unnerve him. He dropped his eyes to his hands and muttered, How bad is it?

I didn’t respond. Instead, I asked suddenly, Vincent, what do you really want from me?

The dining area was mostly deserted. Across the way, Camila and Dorian were playing happily at the little playground.

When Vincent heard my question, I could see realization dawn on his facehe knew I’d figured out something was wrong with his injury.

He must have forgotten I was a doctor when he deliberately hurt himself in the bathroom.

It probably only hit him when I started treating the wound.

But it was too late by then.

Despite his obvious anger, Vincent answered me seriously, I want you happy. I want you away from Zain. And I want youto be mine.”

I studied his face and saw nothing but raw honesty in his eyes.

Even so, I couldn’t bring myself to believe that Vincentnotorious player that he wasactually wanted me for real.

I was being almost clinical about it. We’re not even friends,I told him. You don’t need to do any of this for me.”

Vincent shot up from his chair, fury blazing in his eyes. So you really were lying to me before.

I frowned, confused by his meaning.

When he didn’t explain, I continued, And stop coming to my apartment.”

Vincent’s hands clenched so hard his whole body shook.

I watched him close his eyes briefly, like he was remembering something from earlier.

When he opened them again, they were bloodshot and icecold. Blanche, I’ve been with plenty of women, but you’re the most heartless

one I’ve ever met.”

He spun around and walked away.

At the playground, Vincent called out, Dorian, we’re leaving

Dorian looked startled. What?

Vincent didn’t repeat himself. He just snapped, Move it.

Dorian looked lost but obeyed anyway.

I watched Vincent grab Dorian and stride away without a backward glance.

He wasn’t just jealous anymore. Now he was furious.

I could practically see him thinking that maybe it was time to give up and leave me alone.

I was married, after all. Whether I was happy or miserable, my heart belonged to Zain.

All those words, all those promisesjust empty air.

Camila bounced back to me and threw her arms around my neck. Aunt Blanche, what’s wrong?

I hugged her close, my voice thick as I said, I’m fine, sweetheart.

For some reason, tears threatened to spill over.

Camila rubbed my back gently. Did Uncle Vincent make

you sad?

I shook my head. No, it’s not his fault. I’m justnot handling things well.”

Camila nuzzled against my cheek. Aunt Blanche, you’re amazing. And Uncle Vincent is too. He can draw way more than maple leaves. He draws rice paddies and farmers and all sorts of things I’ve never seen before.

I rested my chin on Camila’s shoulder and asked quietly, Do you really like Uncle Vincent?

Camila considered this. Yeah, but I like Mr. Jake too.

I couldn’t help smiling. I ruffled her hair. Camila, you’re an excellent judge of character.”

Camila pulled back and asked, What about you, Aunt Blanche? Which one do you like more?

The question caught me off guard, and I fell silent.

Finally, I smiled and said, Neither.

Demetrius was exceptional and scandalfree.

Vincent had a reputation as a playboy, but getting to know him showed me he was actually decent.

But no matter how good either of them was, I couldn’t let myself hope.

I was still married.

The next morning, I woke up and called Zain.

He answered immediately, but Joanna’s voice came through the speaker. Hello, are you calling for Zain?

I didn’t hang up. Instead, I said casually, Yeah, put him on.

Joanna recognized my voice but didn’t end the call either.

It only took her a few seconds to hand over the phone. They must be pretty tight.

Zain, your phone,Joanna said.

I heard water running in the background.

Zain was probably in the shower while Joanna hung out in the bedroom.

Zain called out, Alright, Joanna, grab me some boxers.”

Joanna replied, Sure thing. I’m leaving the phone by the sink. Don’t forget to pick it up.”

After the door clicked shut, the water stopped.

A moment later, Zain said, I’ll call you back.”

Just before he hung up, I caught Joanna’s teasing voice: Zain, I haven’t showered yet either.

I didn’t need much imagination to figure out what they were up to.

It didn’t bother me anymore.

About forty minutes later, Zain called back.

I was already doing rounds at the hospital. It wasn’t a good time, so I declined the call.

After finishing my rounds, I called him back, and he picked up.

What do you need?Zain asked.

I got straight to business. I can take time off soon. Let’s handle the divorce papers.

But Zain shut me down. I’ve got a meeting. Besides, you know what I want first.

I knew exactly what he meanthe wanted to sleep together one last time before the divorce,

But why the hell should I?

Back then, I didn’t mind sharing his bed.

Now it was different. The thought disgusted me.

But if he wanted to play games

I didn’t hesitate. If you’re so desperate to prove something, go screw whoever you want. Makes no difference to me.”

I hung up.

If he wanted to play dirty, I could be just as ruthless.

If he didn’t have time for divorce papers, then I’d just go to Jacob Manor and tell Oswald everything.

I went through my workday normally. After finishing up that afternoon, I called Oswald.

Oswald answered, his voice warm and bright. Blanche!

I asked softly, Grandpa, will you be home tonight?

Oswald said, Yes, I’ll be here.”

I thought for a moment, then said, Grandpa, I’d like to come to Jacob Manor. There’s something I need to discuss with you in person.

Oswald sounded worried, but he still said, Of course. I’ll be waiting for you.”

After work, I drove straight to Jacob Manor.

The moment I walked in, I heard Amiya and the other staff screaming in panic: Lord Jacob fell! Quick, call Mr. Jacob, Mrs. Jacob, Miss Carryeveryone!

The whole place erupted in chaos.

My heart plummeted, and I rushed to see what happened.

Oswald lay collapsed on the stone walkway, blood pooling from the back of his head. He was completely unconscious.

I didn’t dare move him. I frantically dialed emergency services.

At the hospital, ER doctors worked to revive Oswald.

I called Zain to tell him Oswald had taken a serious fall and was hospitalized.

Zain raced over as soon as he got the news.

Just as he arrived, the emergency room doors opened, and a doctor wearing glasses approached us. He walked over to Zain and me and

said, Lord Jacob is conscious. He’s asking to speak with both of you.”

My stomach clenched. I had a pretty good idea what Oswald wanted to say, but there was no avoiding it now. I had to go in.

No matter how complicated things were, nothing mattered more than someone’s life.
