164 Chapter 164 His Devotion A Weapon
Blanche’s POV 1
Zain had come with me, but when Wayne remembered my claim about being just Zain’s secretary and witnessed Zain’s gentle care for
Joanna, he clearly decided Joanna had to be Oswald’s granddaughter–in–law.
Sure of his conclusion, Wayne beamed at her warmly. “No worries at all. Please, feel comfortable here.”
His kindness touched Joanna, and she smiled back.
“Thank you so much.”
Wayne gave a nod before turning toward Nathan. “Zain, who’s this good–looking young man?” he inquired.
The stranger at the door had caught his eye carlier.
Wayne didn’t recognize him, but he could sense importance radiating from the guy.
All these years, only Drew and Nicholas had tagged along with Zain, making this newcomer someone worth noticing.
Kingsley jumped in before Zain could respond, sneering, “Wayne, he’s nobody special. Don’t waste your time on him.”
Zain interrupted sharply. “Wayne, meet Nathan. He handles business deals with Drew and me.”
Wayne’s focus shifted from Kingsley to Nathan, his face brightening with real interest. “Ah, got it. One of the rising stars then. Young and
full of potential!”
Nathan rose and gripped Wayne’s hand, responding modestly, “Thank you for the kind words, Wayne.”
Wayne smiled and acknowledged everyone else at the table before continuing his rounds.
All this drama and showing off was standard behavior among rich people, but I’d always despised these kinds of scenes.
I remained silent, now and then refilling my wine glass.
Next to me, Vincent saw how dejected I appeared.
It bothered him, leaving him unsure how to offer comfort.
Eventually, he slipped his hand under the table and grasped my chilled fingers. “Take it easy with that. You’ll end up drunk if you keep
going”
I softly freed my hand and gave a weak smile. “I’m fine, really.”
My alcohol tolerance wasn’t the issue; I could handle the wine.
What made me sick was this whole environment.
From across the table, Zain scowled as he watched me drinking more heavily than normal.
He seemed ready to speak when Joanna grabbed his arm and murmured, “Zain, I need the ladies‘ room.”

Right away, he looked away from me and focused on Joanna. “Sure thing, I’ll walk you there”
When Joanna stood up, Zain got up too.
He stayed right beside her every step, hovering like a bodyguard afraid she might fall, even extending his hand to support her.
I glanced up just as they headed off together.
They stuck to each other like magnets, never separating for a second.
The sight cut deep with its cruel irony.
Once Zain and Joanna disappeared, my expression became a mess of conflicting feelings. I felt confused, torn, and maybe even wounded.
Drew, positioned directly across from me, spotted my disappointment immediately. Something about it secretly thrilled him.
Nathan also picked up on my pain and quietly hoped I’d finally cut ties with Zain completely.
Vincent, on the other hand, felt his chest constrict with anger.
He blamed himself for his past cowardice and resented that I still carried a torch for Zain.
The table went quiet. Everyone got lost in their own dark thoughts.
After Wayne made several toasts, his phone buzzed.
He checked the caller ID, then addressed the group he’d been about to toast. “Excuse me, I have to take this. Back in a moment.”
When Wayne stood to answer his phone, everyone stayed silent.
Wayne walked out to the backyard for the call.
Oswald was on the other end.
“How are things going?” Oswald asked, sounding somewhat worried.
Wayne smiled at his concern. “Oswald, your granddaughter–in–law and Zain are getting along perfectly. No need to stress.”
Oswald burst into delighted laughter. “Is that so?”
“Definitely” Wayne confirmed. “Zain even handled her drinks and personally escorted her to the bathroom. You can stop worrying now.”
Oswald’s chuckling got even louder. “Wonderful news. Seems like Zain really does have feelings for her”
Wayne joined in his amusement, then wondered, “Oswald, I understand your granddaughter–in–law is pursuing medical studies?”
“That’s right, she is,” Oswald said.
Wayne sounded genuinely impressed. “Quite remarkable, Medical school is no joke.”
But Oswald just waved it off. “Nothing too special about it. You should get back to your party. I’m heading off for a chess game.”
After ending the call, Wayne returned to the banquet hall.

When Wayne came back, Zain and Joanna were returning from the restroom.
Zain walked behind Joanna, carefully holding up the train of her gown to keep it from dragging. He didn’t give a damn how it looked to everyone else; he was perfectly content to crouch down and serve her, even if people thought it was degrading.
I saw them approaching, but before I could study them closely, a hand softly blocked my vision.
I recognized Vincent’s touch immediately.
Sitting across from me was the man I’d once twisted myself into knots trying to please, but all he’d ever wanted was to watch me suffer
and hit rock bottom.
Vincent and his crew were complete strangers to me, and I meant nothing to them.
Yet instead of having any grudge against me, they actually defended me and watched my back.
Considering all of this, my eyes filled with tears. To Vincent, it must have looked like I was crying over Zain, and his heart dropped.
Vincent felt irritated but mostly sorry for me. He took my hand and said, “Come on, let’s go.”
I followed him quickly, feeling a bit wobbly. Kingsley noticed Vincent getting ready to leave and shouted, “Dinner’s not even over yet. You
two heading out already?”
Vincent held onto my hand, not bothering to turn around. His voice was icy. “Missing one meal won’t hurt us, but God knows what could
happen if we stay around all this garbage.”
Kingsley didn’t try to block us. Instead, he nodded approvingly. “Now that’s how a real man handles things. Good for you.”
Vincent didn’t catch that. His only focus was getting me out of there.
After we left the banquet hall, he guided me outside to a swing set on the lawn.
He didn’t ask me to sit, and he didn’t look my way either.
Instead, he turned away, staring off into the distance.
We both just stood there on the grass, neither sitting on the swing nor speaking a word.
The weird, thick silence stretched between us for ages.
Finally, Vincent couldn’t take it anymore. He whirled around, fury blazing in his eyes as he grabbed my shoulders. “Just tell me, what the
hell did you ever see in Zain?”
I met his gaze directly and said, “I don’t like him anymore.”
I wasn’t lying; I’d stopped loving Zain ages ago.
But I knew I still couldn’t feel completely numb.
How could I act like none of this affected me, especially after what just went down?
I’d loved Zain with everything I had for so long, and he couldn’t care less about me.

Who wouldn’t be devastated by that?
Hearing me sound so sure, Vincent’s frown got deeper. He stared at me like he could see straight through to my soul, demanding, “Then why were you crying back there?”
Powerless against his own emotions, Vincent hated knowing I still loved Zain, but he couldn’t help wanting to shield me anyway.
He was hooked on me, tied to me completely.
I sensed his desperation, as if he believed his life would be destroyed if he couldn’t have me.
