176 Chapter 176 Fate Interrupted By Fever
Blanche’s POV 1
Vincent’s silence stretched too long, making my nerves spike. “Blanche–did that old bastard say something to tick you off?”
He’d apparently bribed the fortune teller to feed me some line about being meant for him.
Since Vincent hadn’t witnessed the conversation himself, he had zero clue what the old man had actually told me.
Clearly, he was sweating that the fortune teller had screwed up and left me furious.
My stone–cold quiet was only making him more jittery.
He spun around, grumbling, “I’m marching over there to find out what he said. If he upset you, I’ll tear him a new one.”
His sudden rage caught me off guard. I snatched his hand, yanking him back. “Vincent, stop. It’s nothing–don’t make a scene.”
“Just tell me what he said,” he pushed, refusing to drop it.
I wasn’t about to fill Vincent in on the fortune teller’s actual words, so I whipped up a lie. “He claimed I’m not only destined to die young
-I’ll doom any man I marry. Said after my divorce, I should stay alone. Otherwise, I’ll bring nothing but disaster to myself and everyone
around me.”
Before I’d even finished speaking, Vincent swept me into his arms, one hand hovering near my mouth as he urged frantically, “Spit it out!
Three times–knock on wood! Don’t you dare say shit like that, Blanche.”
I’d been totally indifferent to my made–up story, but Vincent’s intense reaction blindsided me.
1 froze, stunned, unsure how to read his response.
Seeing me go rigid only ramped up his panic. He shook my arm gently. “Come on, Blanche–spit it out. You’re about to drive me insane.”
I finally met his eyes, my voice barely a whisper. “Even if I spit, nothing’s gonna change, Fate is fate, isn’t it?”
Vincent had no idea what the fortune teller actually said, but my tone convinced him I was telling the truth.
The way I shrugged it off–like it meant nothing–cut deep. He crushed me against him, pressing his chin to my shoulder, his voice low
and fierce. “Blanche, even if you’re poison to every guy on the planet, I still want to marry you. If you’re gonna die young… then I’ll trade
my years for yours. I only want you. Just you. Always.”
His grip was so tight I could barely breathe, but his words slammed into my chest–made me think of the old man’s claim that Vincent
was my soulmate.
Could there be any truth in it?
Maybe Vincent really was decent underneath all the tabloid drama.
I’d never actually seen him with another woman except Norma.
I didn’t fight or pull away.

As he held me, he seemed terrified, his body shaking slightly.
I was about to admit it was all bullshit, but my phone rang.
Vincent loosened his grip at the sound, his voice hoarse. “Take it.”
I glanced up, and my heart clenched–his eyes were bloodshot, the corners wet.
I couldn’t tell if he’d been crying, but the sight made my throat constrict.
The phone kept buzzing, so I pulled it out. Heidi’s name lit up the screen.
After a moment’s pause, I answered.
Heidi’s voice came through, panicked. “Mrs. Jacob, thank God. I’ve been calling Mr. Jacob, but he won’t pick up.”
The worry in her tone made my frown deepen. “What’s happening?” I asked.
“Carry’s running a fever. I checked on her upstairs, and she’s drenched in sweat. Her temperature’s 104. It’s serious, Mrs. Jacob,” Heidi
said.
My heart rate spiked, but I kept my voice calm. “Heidi, give her the fever reducer now. I’m coming home.”.
“Okay,” Heidi replied.
“Call me if it climbs higher,” I added. “I need to track down Carry’s father.”
Heidi agreed and ended the call.
Vincent had heard enough to kill his mood, but he still nodded with concern.
“You’re leaving?” he asked.
“I have to find Zain,” I said, already heading toward the market stalls.
After a few steps, I stopped, turned back to Vincent, and said, “Go ahead without me. Next time, I’ll spend time with you.”
My words took some sting out of his disappointment, but not much.
Then he remembered–I’d promised to marry him before, and that had never happened. His hope deflated.
But I was already rushing off, too worried about Carry to notice his mood shift.
Vincent hesitated, then followed behind me.
We found Zain and Joanna ahead, checking out a jewelry cart, and I didn’t waste time.
I marched over, grabbing Zain by the arm. “Carry’s got a 104 fever. We need to get her to the hospital–right now.”
A 104 fever in a child was dangerous–one slip, and there could be serious complications.
Carry was strong, but I wasn’t gambling.
If I ignored this and something went wrong… I’d never forgive myself.

Zain went white. He stared at me like he couldn’t process it, then scrambled for his phone, calling Heidi to verify.
The moment Heidi’s voice confirmed the fever, he completely lost it.
I remembered–Zain had taken Carry from Blissfield Villa to the hospital earlier to visit Joanna.
Joanna had wanted Carry to sleep over, but Heidi had called about school tomorrow, so Zain brought her home.
Then Joanna sulked, claiming she couldn’t sleep without Carry–so she’d begged Zain to stay and take her out instead.
That’s how they ended up wandering the old town’s bustling streets.
They just hadn’t expected to run into me.
Not long before, they’d been fighting over Carry.
And now? Now the kid was burning up?
Zain might question me, but he couldn’t doubt Heidi–not when she sounded that frantic.
After hanging up, he turned to Joanna gently. “Take your time here. I’ll send someone to pick you up later, get you back to the hospital.”
Joanna nodded, her expression tender. “Alright.”
But Zain lingered, glancing at her like he wasn’t sure he should leave.
Joanna’s brow creased, and she touched his arm–her voice warm, sincere. “Zain, I’m fine, really. Carry needs you more. Go–hurry. Just
call me when you can, okay? I’m so worried about her.”
The sweetness was so thick I couldn’t help but grimace.
Zain finally backed away, looking over his shoulder once more. “Alright. I will,” he said.
Then he and I took off, moving fast.
By the time Vincent caught up, all he could see were their backs disappearing into the crowd.
He stood there watching them go, his chest tight with a tangle of emotions–frustration and something deeper, like an ache.
Meanwhile, Joanna, still by the jewelry stall, spotted Vincent approaching. She smoothed her dress, tucked a stray hair behind her ear,
and glided over.
“Mr. Aarav,” she said softly as she approached, “would you like to walk with me?”
Vincent dragged his gaze from the empty street, raising an eyebrow. “Ms. Vins–you talking to me?”
Joanna smiled, nodding. “Who else?”
Her confident approach and the way she positioned herself suggested she expected an easy victory–as if her looks and charm alone
would be enough to captivate a man of Vincent Aarav’s status.
But Vincent just brushed it off and said, “Ms. Vins, convincing me to walk with you isn’t exactly tough. But let’s get one thing straight—

only if your Zain and my girl both give the green light. Then sure, I’ll take a stroll. Until then?”
He shrugged, his gaze drifting back toward where Blanche had vanished. “I’m busy elsewhere”
