194 Chapter 194 No Room For Him

Blanche’s POV

With that, I turned my back to Vincent.

Vincent froze, clearly thrown off guard.

Everything had been normal just moments beforehe appeared puzzled.

Vincent’s chest seemed to tighten. He settled beside the bed and pressed again, Are you sick?

I didn’t face him, but I answered anyway, No, I’m just exhausted.

My tone had grown distant once more, matching how things were when we first crossed paths.

Vincent kept his gaze fixed on me, unable to tear it

away.

He persistently watched the back of my head, as though staring hard enough might unlock my thoughts.

Yet no matter how he tried, he couldn’t decode me.

Is she still hung up on Zain?Vincent wondered, unease creeping through him.

The moment that notion hit him, I suddenly spun around to meet his eyes.

The small bedside lamp cast a soft glow, making my face appear blurred and mysterious in the shadows.

I locked eyes with Vincent, hesitated like I was choosing my words carefully, then finally spoke, You reek of perfume.

Naturally, there wasn’t any fragranceI’d thrown that out deliberately, testing whether Vincent would

confess to visiting Joanna.

Vincent’s mind went blank for an instant when I

addressed him. He tugged at his shirt collar, inhaled, then flashed me a playful grin. It’s your scent.

I curved my lips into a subtle smile at his response. I spoke softly, Vincent, just get some rest. I’m really

worn out.”

Then I turned away from him once more.

Vincent expected I’d scoot over, perhaps create just

enough space for him to fit on the bed.

But I remained stillI didn’t give him any room

whatsoever.

Vincent was concerned about disrupting my rest, so he didn’t push it.

He dragged over a chair instead, hunched against the bed’s edge, and messaged Kingsley: [Stop by the hospital tomorrow and keep Amber company for a bit.] Vincent figured I was feeling low, and maybe some different conversation would lift my spirits.

I lay on my side, staring into the voidno matter how I tried, sleep eluded me.

I’d always sensed that Vincent must have his own motives for staying close, but I’d never pinpointed exactly what he was after.

Perhaps tonight, I finally got it.

What Vincent genuinely wanted was Joanna.

But Joanna had her heart set on Zain, so Vincent came to me, planning to use me somehow to reach Joanna.

Right as morning light crept in, my phone chimed with a text from Heidi.

Heidi: [Mr. Jacob, breakfast is ready. I’m heading out from Blissfield Villa now. If Miss Carry’s still sleeping, could you step out and get it?] I texted back: [Sure.] Carry had been transferred to a standard room late the previous night.

Around thirty minutes later, Heidi appeared outside

the room.

Carry was still asleep, so I carefully stepped out.

When Heidi held out the breakfast, I hesitated to take

  1. it.

After a brief pause, I unexpectedly said, Heidi, could you call Sue’s mother?

Heidi stared at me, bewildered. What?

I had spent the entire night turning over Amber’s words, guilt gnawing at me.

Just touch base with her. See how she’s doing, find out if she’s recovered,I said quietly.

22:25

Heidi instantly grasped what I was really thinking, and tried to encourage me gently. Mr. Jacob, if you genuinely worry about Sue’s mother, you should reach out yourself.”

I glanced away, my voice flat. I don’t worry, not exactlyit’s just, she’s still Carry’s mother. I simply don’t want anything bad to happen to her.”

Heidi sighed. Mr. Jacob, Sue’s mother is genuinely a wonderful person. Don’t mess up by losing her. Like you said, she’s Carry’s momonly her real mother will ever care for her that deeply. If you don’t act now, it’ll be something you and Miss Carry will both regret someday.

I went quiet briefly, my thoughts drifting to the divorce papers we’d already signed, and the roughly twenty days remaining before everything would be finalized. Finally, I said, Whatever we hadit’s over

now.

But Heidi interrupted, But you both still share Carry.” I fell silent again.

After a beat, I eventually accepted the food container

from Heidi and said, I’m heading in to help Carry with breakfast.

When I entered the room, Carry shifted in bed,

sleepily rubbing her eyes.

The moment she saw me holding breakfast, she piped up in her tiny voice, Daddy!

I sat next to her bed, grinning warmly. Heidi prepared breakfast for you. Let Daddy help you get cleaned up and then we’ll eat together, alright?

Carry, her hair all tousled and wild, nodded eagerly. Okay!

I went to the bathroom for some warm water, then carefully cleaned Carry’s face and hands with a wet cloth. Remember to brush your teeth, sweetheart,I told her.

After getting her clean, I awkwardly attempted to fix Carry’s hair. I wasn’t very skilled at it, so she wound up with a somewhat messy low ponytail.

When I finished, I sat down to spoonfeed Carry her breakfast porridge.

Halfway through feeding her, I suddenly asked, Carry, do you miss your mom?

At the mention of mom,Carry’s face scrunched up, and she quickly shook her head.

Seeing that troubled expression, my chest ached but I didn’t press further.

But a moment later, Carry tilted her small face toward me and asked with innocent wonder, Daddy, where’s Miss Joanna?

I smiled gently and stroked her hair.

Miss Joanna stayed with me last night to watch over you. She didn’t leave until morning. She wanted to wait for you to wake up and spend more time with you, but I told her to go to school first.

Carry brightened, squirming with excitement. Daddy, Miss Joanna is so wonderful to me! Other than you, nobody cares about me more than she does!

I just smiled without responding, gently pinching her cheek. Let’s finish eating for now, okay?

Happiness filled Carry’s heart, and for the first time in

ages, a genuine smile replaced the pallor on her face.

Watching Carry so cheerful, I decided that little white lie had been worthwhile.

Even if Joanna hadn’t really been at the hospital last night, her intentions were there all the same.

After Carry finished eating, I cleaned up the food

container.

As I returned the food box to Heidi, I suddenly said, Heidi, can you watch Carry for a moment? I’m just going out to make a callI’ll be back shortly.

Heidi took the container and answered, Sure.”

Before leaving the ward, I stopped by the nurse’s station to ask which department handles adults with fevers or pneumonia.

Once I had my answer, I headed directly to the respiratory ward.

After some consideration, I figured I should check on Blanche.

When I reached the nurse’s station in the respiratory

ward, I asked which room Blanche was in. The nurse informed me she’d been placed in one of the VIP

suites.

I thanked her and walked straight to the VIP section.

When I finally located Blanche’s room, I heard Kingsley’s voice from inside. Amber, look! I brought you some cupcakes, fruit, and bubble tea. Oh, and I also picked up some comic bookscheck them out and see which one you want.

I peered through the glass window.

Blanche was sitting up against the headboard, while Vincent sat beside her, busy peeling an orange.

Kingsley was positioned at the foot of the bed, displaying each treat he’d brought for Blanche.

I was about to walk in, but when I noticed the two guys inside, I suddenly realized I wasn’t necessary here -showing up would be meaningless.

So this is what I was concerned about?I thought. Blanche wasn’t alone at allactually, she had two men looking after her.

With that realization, I walked away without another

look.
