221 Chapter 221 At The Mercy Of
Predators
Blanche’s POV
I lay curled up on the hospital bed while Ophelia loomed over me like some kind of predator ready to
strike.
“Blanche, how dare you lay a finger on a Jacob child? You got some kind of death wish?” she snarled.
Every word cut through me like a blade, each syllable designed to shred whatever was left of me.
I was completely wiped out. I managed to lift my eyes to meet hers, but I didn’t have the energy to even speak.
My silence only made Ophelia’s rage explode. She stomped right up and cracked me hard across the face.
“Think you can just ignore me? Who the hell gave you
permission to act like this?” she screamed.

She didn’t give a damn that I was still Zain’s wife.
My head snapped to the side, a burning red mark spreading across my cheek.
I glared at her through eyes blazing with fury. “Go ahead and throw your tantrum,” I sneered. “This is the only shot you’ll get to act tough.”

That pushed Ophelia over the edge. She lunged at me and practically threw herself on top of me, pinning me down against the bed without hesitation.
She started hammering me with her fists, scratching and hitting me, completely unhinged.
I was so drained I couldn’t even try to fight her off.
Ophelia didn’t quit until she was gasping for air. Under her, my face had gone ghostly white, so pale it was
almost scary.
My body was covered in angry red welts, clear proof of her vicious grip.
Ophelia looked down at the damage she’d done and nodded with satisfaction, obviously pleased with her handiwork.

But she wasn’t finished. Baring her teeth, she dug her nails deep into my arm, her face twisted with hatred. “You curse,” she hissed. “We never should’ve let you through our front door.”
“What’re you looking at? Want to die or something? Why don’t you just go kill yourself!”
“You actually had the balls to touch a Jacob? You must be begging to lose that pathetic little life!”
“All you Callum are nothing but dirty trash–can’t even show your faces in decent company.”
I lay there on the hospital bed, completely defenseless.
All I could do was try to shrink away, doing my best to avoid her punches and clawing fingers.
I was so exhausted I couldn’t even find the strength to hit back. Even if I wanted to fight, my body wouldn’t
listen.
And as for Ophelia’s stream of nasty insults, I was too worn out to care, much less respond.
Ophelia hadn’t planned on stopping, but suddenly her phone started buzzing.

I couldn’t make out what the person on the other end was saying, but I watched her expression shift
instantly.
Her voice turned panicked as she answered, “Yeah, I understand. I’ll be there right away.”
Whatever it was had to be massive–big enough to make Ophelia abandon this perfect chance to torture
She didn’t even look at me before she bolted from the
room.
After Ophelia left, I finally breathed a small sigh of relief–but I was so weak, I couldn’t move. All I could
do was watch helplessly as the red marks on my arm got darker, slowly turning into bruises right before my
eyes.
I had no clue when I drifted off to sleep. I was completely drained, my whole body sticky and gross.
Somewhere between dreaming and waking, I heard someone pushing open my hospital room door.
I was so on edge that even the smallest sound made

my eyes fly open.
A man walked into the room–Kaden.
The second I saw him, I knew this wasn’t going to be good. I didn’t bother trying to hide or put on an act. Instead, I let out a harsh, bitter laugh. “Well, Kaden. What brings you by this time?”
Kaden was surprisingly calm. He pulled a chair up next to my bed, his eyes taking in my beaten–up state. “My sister had a high–risk exposure,” he said flatly.
Earlier tonight, Tia was helping her mentor during surgery. Halfway through the operation, she
accidentally cut through her glove–and sliced her
own skin too.
Worse yet, the patient on the table was HIV–positive.
The entire operating room instantly erupted into chaos.
My eyes flickered with worry. “Did she get the medication?” I asked anxiously.
Kaden didn’t answer. Instead, he leaned closer, his voice cold and cutting. “Feeling pretty good about

yourself now, aren’t you?”
I blinked in confusion. “What?”
Seeing my shocked expression, Kaden let out a cold, mocking laugh. “Now you act all surprised? Weren’t you the one who talked her into becoming a doctor?”
I just shut my mouth, refusing to respond.
It was true–I really had told Tia to follow her dreams no matter what.
Seeing me stay quiet, Kaden’s anger boiled over. “My sister could’ve just married rich and lived easy, never worrying about anything. But because of something you said, she decided to be a doctor. And what did that get her?”
Kaden stopped, his voice fading.
After a long, tense silence, he finally spoke again, his tone icy. “Blanche, if anything happens to my sister, do you really think the Jacobs will ever let you walk away?”
I just let out a dry, bitter laugh. “Let’s get real—even if this hadn’t happened, the Jacobs were never going to

let me go, were they?”
Kaden just stared at me, his face blank. He didn’t say a word.
After that crushing silence, I couldn’t help the
creeping unease building inside me. My nerves were stretched tight as I shot Kaden a suspicious look.
“What do you want?” I asked warily.
Right after I said that, Kaden jumped to his feet, his expression hard. “I don’t hit women,” he said, his voice
like ice.
Before I could figure out what he meant, Kaden jerked his chin toward the door. “Get in here,” he barked.
The hospital room door opened, and a young woman
walked in.
I stared at the figure in the doorway for a long moment before it hit me–it was Ashlee.
Ashlee walked right up to my bedside, her lips curving into a sweet smile. “Ms. Callum, it’s been a while. Do you still remember me?”
I’d never forget that incident–even if I tried. At that

event, Ashlee was completely humiliated because of Vincent, losing all her dignity in front of everyone.
Before I could say anything, Kaden snapped out an order, his tone freezing cold. “Do it.”
At that, Ashlee rubbed her hands together eagerly, and without any hesitation–just like Ophelia before her- she started hitting me, totally ruthless and uncaring.
Right then, I was completely drained of strength, like prey trapped with nowhere to run, left at the mercy of whoever wanted to tear me apart.
Ever since Vincent had made her lose face in front of everyone, Ashlee had been nursing that grudge, refusing to let it go.
She’d sworn she’d get her revenge on me and make me pay for that humiliation.
So now, she was going all out on me, showing zero
mercy.
Seeing me so weak I could barely breathe, unable to fight back at all, Ashlee felt her anger finally getting satisfied.

“Weren’t you so smug when Vincent defended you? Look now–I’ve got you pinned, and you can’t do squat about it, can you?” Ashlee sneered.
Ashlee grabbed my long hair hard, yanking my chin up and forcing me to look at her.
“Go ahead, call Vincent. Tell him to come save you- just try,” she mocked.
“Who do you think Vincent really is? You honestly believe you’re his precious little princess? Once he gets tired of you, do you think he’ll even remember trash like you?”
As she kept sneering, Ashlee kept slapping me across the face without mercy, each hit ringing out sharp and
clear.
When her hand started to sting, Ashlee grabbed my face, squeezing so hard her nails left marks. “What’s with that blank stare? You’re so damn stone–faced I’m about to break my hand just hitting you,” she taunted.
Shaking out her hand, Ashlee jumped right back in, landing more slaps on me as she mocked, “I could beat you half to death in this room and I bet Vincent

wouldn’t show up to save you, not in a million years.”
Through it all, Kaden just stood there, watching the whole thing with cold indifference–there wasn’t a trace of pity or mercy in his eyes.
Noticing it was getting late, Kaden finally spoke up, his tone cold and sharp. “That’s enough. We’re going.”
Ashlee pulled her hand back, pouting with obvious disappointment. “But Kaden, I’m not finished yet,” she whined, clearly annoyed she couldn’t keep going.
