Blanche’s POV
The officer nodded without missing a beat. “Sure thing, we’ll get right on it.”
After making sure I was okay, he stepped out of my hospital room.
He returned shortly after.
Pulling up a chair beside my bed, the officer looked sheepish. “We just checked, but the security camera in that room’s busted.”
My heart dropped like a stone.
Anger flared in my chest, tears stinging my eyes. I snapped at him, “Then what’s the point of telling me? Go check the other cameras–don’t just stand there doing nothing!”
The officer’s voice went soft when he saw how worked up I was. “Hey, it’s fine. We’ve got everything

documented. Leave it to us.”
That wasn’t good enough for me. I wanted Ophelia, Kaden, Ashlee, and Nathan thrown in jail right now.
But since he’d already said his piece, I couldn’t keep losing it and making a scene.
After the officer left, it dawned on me–the Jacob family had probably already cleaned up their mess.
Going to the cops was pointless; I knew damn well nothing would come of it.
That night, I couldn’t sleep, tossing and turning for hours.
The doctors didn’t show up to check on me until the next morning.
Even though I was black and blue all over, they acted like they couldn’t see a thing. Instead, they put on this fake caring act and asked, “Blanche, where’s your family?”
I didn’t say a word. Just stared at them with my bloodshot eyes.

The head doctor, some woman, said gently, “You’re still pretty weak. Even if you don’t need complete bed rest, you really should have family here with you.”
I stayed silent.
When they saw I wasn’t talking, the doctors didn’t push it.
After they finished their rounds, hunger hit me like a truck–my stomach was actually cramping from being so empty.
I hadn’t eaten a single bite or had even a sip of water since last night.
I could barely sit up, let alone drag myself outside to
find food.
The doctor was right about one thing–I desperately needed someone to take care of me.
But who was left? Who could I even call?
The Callum were off–limits. If Quinton found out about any of this, he’d blow his top and go straight for the Jacob family’s throats.

Vincent popped into my head for a second, and I thought about calling him. But after thinking it over, I pushed that idea away–better not drag him into this
mess too.
As for Demetrius, he was just a doctor. If I pulled him into all this drama, it would only wreck his career, and
I couldn’t do that to him.
That left just one person–Zain.
I borrowed the nurse’s phone and dialed his number. Maybe because it was an unknown number, Zain actually picked up.
“Hello?” His voice was rough, like he’d just rolled out of
bed.
I bit my lip, then finally spoke. “Zain, it’s me. I—”
But before I could get another word out, Zain hung up without hesitation.
I knew Zain was pissed about me ending the
pregnancy, but right now, with my life barely hanging together, I had nowhere else to go–he was my only shot.

But Zain turned out to be even colder than I’d imagined.
He wouldn’t even let me finish a sentence.
As the dial tone buzzed in my ear, I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly.
When the laughter died down, the tears came flooding
back.
Right now, I was down to my last option.
I dialed Amara’s number, and she answered instantly.
“Hello? Who’s this?”
My nose burned, tears streaming down even harder. My voice shook as I sobbed, “Amara, can you come to the hospital? I really need someone here.”
Amara didn’t hesitate–I could hear her grabbing her coat and rushing out.
As she hurried along, Amara asked anxiously, “What happened?”
I didn’t want to get into it. I just said, “And could you pick me up a new phone too?”

Amara must have heard the pain in my voice because she didn’t ask any more questions.
After I hung up, I only had to wait a short while before Amara burst through the door, looking frantic.
It was winter, but Amara was sweating bullets by the time she got there.
When Amara saw the bruises covering my face, she froze dead in her tracks, completely shocked.
“What happened?” Her voice shook with confusion and
worry.
But I just gave her a weak smile and said, “I’m fine.”
Amara saw right through my act. The tears she’d been holding back finally broke free, streaming down her face.
Her voice cracked with fury as she yelled, “Blanche, tell me who did this to you? I’ll destroy them!”
Seeing how upset Amara was getting, I rushed to calm her down, my own voice trembling. “Amara, really, I’m okay.”
Amara’s eyes were bright red, tears still flowing.

In all these years, Amara had never seen me like this- so broken, so beaten down. Seeing me in this state, she knew I was only putting on a brave face to keep her from freaking out.
After a moment, Amara forced herself to swallow her rage, pushing down her emotions for my sake.
She came back to my bedside, gently straightening my blankets with tender hands, and asked softly, “You must be starving, aren’t you?”
I nodded slightly, tears spilling over–not just from pain, but from exhaustion and relief. “Yeah.”
Amara said, “I’ll go grab you some food. Just stay put, okay?”
With that, Amara turned and walked out, wiping her
tears as she went.
After Amara got some food, she came back and even fed me herself.
When I finished eating, Amara cleaned up the
containers.
Right then, my new phone started buzzing.

It was Dr. Dominic calling.
Dr. Dominic’s voice came through the line, “Blanche, why didn’t you show up for work today?”
My voice came out scratchy, “Dr. Dominic, I’m sorry, I haven’t been feeling well these past few days and was hoping to take some time off.”
Dr. Dominic snapped the moment he heard I wanted more time off. “Why can’t you give proper notice for your leave?”
Before I could answer, Amara snatched the phone and barked, “Seriously? How’s she supposed to predict when she’ll get sick? Go ahead, enlighten me!”
Dead silence on the other end.
Amara, her anger boiling over, shot back, “If you can’t handle being a boss, maybe you should quit. If you’re fine with the leave, just dock her pay. If not, then fire her. But stop hassling her with this bullshit.”
