285 Chapter 285 Like A Real
Mother
Blanche’s POV
I stepped out of the stairwell first, with Zain right behind me.
We walked toward Joanna’s hospital room together.
Zain stayed close, matching my pace as we moved down the hallway.
When we reached the door, I stopped. I couldn’t bring myself to go inside.
I just stood there in the doorway, waiting.
Zain noticed my hesitation but didn’t push me to
enter.
Zain’s POV
I walked into the room and checked on Joanna. She was fast asleep. I turned to Carry and said, “Carry,

time to go home.”
Carry’s eyes went wide with panic. “No! I don’t want to leave! I’m staying with Miss Joanna!”
Her distress made me soften my tone. “Listen, Carry. I’ll have Cherry come stay with Miss Joanna, alright?”
She turned her face away stubbornly. “No! I’m not going anywhere. I want to look after Miss Joanna myself.”
My expression hardened. I kept my voice low but firm. “I’m asking you one final time–are you coming home or not?”
“I’m not going home,” she shot back.
“Fine. Your mom and I are leaving now. Cherry will come take care of both you and Miss Joanna.”
I spun around and walked out of the room.
Carry watched her father leave, a flicker of hope still burning in her chest. ‘He wouldn’t really abandon me here alone, would he?‘

But Zain disappeared down the hallway.
Tears spilled down Carry’s cheeks, hot and angry.
‘Dad loves me. He wouldn’t just dump me at this hospital by myself… would he?‘ she thought, clinging to desperate hope.
But Carry sat there waiting, and Zain never returned.
More than thirty minutes crawled by before the reality hit her–he really wasn’t coming back. Her heart
plummeted.
Rage boiled up inside her until she couldn’t contain it anymore. She swept the water cup off the table and screamed, “It’s all that horrible mom’s fault! She took Dad away from me! Evil mom! Evil mom!”
The noise jolted Joanna awake.
Seeing Joanna’s eyes open, Carry rushed over in a panic. “Miss Joanna, you’re awake? Did I disturb you? I’m so sorry!”
Joanna stared at Carry’s tear–streaked face, feeling nothing but annoyance. ‘God, I want to smack this kid right now!

She’d finally managed to drift off, and Carry had
ruined it.
Irritation and anger bubbled up inside Joanna, threatening to overflow.
But she forced herself to swallow her fury. Her face remained expressionless as she asked quietly, “Where’s your father?”
Carry’s bottom lip jutted out. “He left with that awful
mom.”
Anxiety tightened Joanna’s features. “Did he say when he’d return?”
Carry shook her head miserably. “No. But Dad said Cherry would come look after you.”
Disappointment crashed over Joanna, and she didn’t bother responding to Carry.
Noticing Joanna’s gloomy expression, Carry hurried to comfort her. “Miss Joanna, I’m not going anywhere—I’ll stay right here with you.”
Joanna had zero interest in conversation, so she just nodded silently.

Almost an hour passed, but Cherry never showed up.
Carry started complaining. “Even the maid won’t listen. When I get home, Dad will make sure she learns her lesson.”
Joanna’s thoughts spiraled into chaos. She couldn’t stop worrying–what if Zain and Blanche were alone together right now? Could old feelings resurface?
But then she tried to reason with herself. ‘They’re about to divorce. There’s no way they’d reconcile now, right?‘
‘But what if they do?‘ The thought gnawed at her.
‘No, that’s impossible. Zain promised to marry me–he wouldn’t betray me like that, Joanna told herself.
‘Besides, if he really wanted Blanche, they wouldn’t have spent five years in this nightmare. Divorce wouldn’t even be an option.’
These thoughts finally helped Joanna regain her composure.
When Cherry still hadn’t appeared, Joanna turned to Carry. “Carry, can you get my phone? I’ll call Grandma

Lillian to come look after me.”
Carry immediately shook her head. “No.”
Seeing Carry’s resistance, Joanna felt a surge of satisfaction.
‘Who would’ve thought Lillian could actually
intimidate this little brat? Just mentioning her name makes Carry nervous, Joanna thought, suppressing a smirk.
But Joanna didn’t care about Carry’s feelings. She smiled sweetly and said, “Carry, Cherry makes me uncomfortable. Grandma Lillian is my mother–having her here is perfect. Isn’t it wonderful to have your own mother caring for you?”
Those words hit Carry like a punch to the gut, loneliness washing over her.
‘Why does everyone seem to adore their mom so much?‘ Carry wondered, bitterness rising again.
Every day after preschool, it was always other kids‘ mothers who picked them up.
Even that annoying Camila was constantly attached to

her mom’s hip.
She could ignore everyone else, but now even Joanna was gushing about her mother like all the rest.
A sharp, inexplicable pain twisted inside Carry. Whenever she thought of Blanche, she couldn’t summon even a trace of love–only resentment.
Overwhelmed by conflicting emotions, Carry threw herself into Joanna’s arms, wrapping her arms around her waist as she sobbed, “Miss Joanna, you’re like a real mother to me. I just want you to be my mom.”
Joanna embraced Carry, but felt no genuine warmth in her heart. She gave a slight smile and murmured,
“Mm.”
Carry cried so hard her tears soaked through Joanna’s hospital gown.
Joanna was clearly growing impatient. She pushed Carry away gently and glanced down, asking, “Why didn’t you go home with your father?”
Carry’s face crumpled with worry. “Miss Joanna, don’t you want me here?”

Joanna forced a quick smile. “Of course not, I just worry about you.”
Carry insisted, “You don’t need to worry, Miss Joanna. I can take care of myself–and help take care of you
too!”
Joanna gave a hollow laugh. “Mm.”
Thirty minutes later, Grandma Lillian finally arrived.
The moment Joanna saw her mother, tears of self–pity
filled her eyes. “Mom.”
Grandma Lillian settled herself on the edge of the bed, forcing Carry to scoot down toward the foot.
Carry was so terrified of Grandma Lillian she didn’t
dare utter a sound.
Grandma Lillian took Joanna’s hand and asked with concern, “How did you hurt your leg so badly?”
Joanna sobbed and nestled against her mother, seeking comfort. “It was an accident, Mom. I didn’t do it on purpose.”
Grandma Lillian gave Joanna a gentle tap. “An

accident? Look at you! You’re a grown woman but you still keep your poor mother worried sick. Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”
Joanna clung to her, voice whiny and sweet. “Oh, Mom, don’t scold me–I’m already suffering. I just want your roast pork and those pancakes you make.”
Grandma Lillian melted instantly, hugging Joanna and stroking her back gently. “Alright, alright, I’ll stay with you. And when we get home, I’ll cook whatever you want. Anything you’re craving, Mom will make it for you.”
Carry sat perched at the foot of the bed, completely ignored.
The moment Grandma Lillian arrived, Joanna only had eyes for her–like Carry had become invisible.
The way Miss Joanna and Grandma Lillian interacted… they were so close, like nothing could ever drive them apart.
Without realizing it, Carry started thinking about Blanche.
285 Chapter 285 Like A Real Mother
Just last year, Blanche had spoiled her–cooking all her favorite meals, taking her to amusement parks, playing games together, flying kites in the park. Back then, Carry had been treated like a little princess…
But now, Mom had changed.
It felt like there was no room for her in Mom’s heart
anymore.
‘Why is everyone else’s mom so loving?‘ Carry wondered, her chest tight with sadness.
‘I just don’t understand… Why is my own mom so cruel?‘ she thought, feeling more abandoned than
ever.
