Callahan Langley's first order of business upon returning was to convene an emergency board meeting.
The atmosphere inside the sleek, glass-walled conference room was suffocatingly tense. Callahan sat at the head of the table, his expression chiseled from ice, his eyes slicing through the assembled executives like a razor.
He didn't bother with pleasantries. His voice rang out, cold and steady, dropping like a sledgehammer into the quiet room.
"I called you all here today to make an official announcement."
He paused, letting his gaze sweep over the room. Every pair of eyes was glued to him.
"Talbot Langley has been formally arrested by the authorities on multiple charges, including premeditated murder, illegal detention, and severe embezzlement of corporate assets."
A collective gasp sucked the air out of the room. The executives who had thrown their weight behind his uncle turned a sickly shade of gray. A pen clattered loudly onto the mahogany table.
The room erupted into panicked murmurs.
Mr. Judson, the Vice President who had so aggressively pushed for Talbot's takeover and harassed the Langley patriarch, shot up from his chair, his eyes wide with disbelief.
"Mr. Langley, surely there's a misunderstanding? He's your uncle! How could he possibly do something that would destroy the company?"
Callahan remembered him vividly. This was the same man who had shouted the loudest at the old manor.
Callahan's eyes locked onto him. He slowly pulled a document from the folder beside him and tossed it onto the table.
"Mr. Judson, are you questioning the criminal investigators, or are you questioning me?"
