“Well, we won’t be using normal bullets. One silver bullet is all it could take to take an enemy down,” I tell him.
“You and I have something better than bullets. You know that.”
I lean in and whisper. “Even if we could control it, we can’t use it. Not in front of people.”
Stephan walks in between tables, checking up on people. When he gets to us, his eyes scan the others. “Fera missed training.”
“She gave up, probably,” Grimm mutters.
Jade turns to Stephan with frustration. “Maybe I should too! It’s ridiculous that we have to spend all day training with barely any moments off.”
“We’re at war. The enemy won’t give you a break just because you’re tired,” he barks at her.

He’s right, but I also welcome the distraction. I’m barely able to sleep at night without Raphael, and I haven’t heard from him at all. I had to ask Tobias if he knew anything. Since it was a secret mission, all he could tell me was that Raphael was okay. That he was alive and well. At least it’s something. But the bastard won’t even shoot me a message? He’s going to get it when he’s back.
Grimm rises after finishing his meal and strides quickly inside. At the next table, Jade watches him go, her eyes following every4

She genuinely looks worried.
“Y-yeah. He’s okay.” I feel like I’m lying. I really don’t know if he’s okay. I know he’s not sleeping well. Anyone can tell with those black undereye circles he carries.
The last two days, he’s kept his promise not to use his power, so he’s been a bit angry about it. Tonight we’re supposed to meet up at the tower.
Two girls stand next to my table, looking somewhere behind me, where the forest and tents stand. “Why do we keep them around? Didn’t the King order all of them to be killed?” The girl seems to shiver.
I glance back and realize they mean the royal ravens. Danica is giving commands while Sephyr feeds them. The birds respond, swooping and shifting as if performing in a show.
“I don’t like those things,” one of the girls mumbles.
As Stephan walks by me, I hold his arm. “Stephan, who trains the ravens?”
He looks in the direction I’m staring. “Well, there you have it- Sephyr and Danica. The rest of us feed the ravens when we’re assigned to.”
Are they the only ones who know how to?”

Damn. There goes my theory. For a moment, I thought it might be them—and maybe it still is-but now the pool of suspects has only grown.
“Who are the members of this squad?”
“I don’t really know. Why do you ask?”
Someone has to know. Maybe Raphael? Uh! If only he were here right now.
“No reason. Just curious,” I tell him.
“Oh. You did great today, by the way.”
I smile. “Thank you. You’re a good teacher.”
“I’d offer private lessons, but this training is already taking all of your time.” He strides away, giving me a wave.
I really don’t know if he’s flirting or being genuine. It’s a mystery with him.
After eating, I go up to my room where I shower and then, after dressing in comfortable, lazy attire, I head to the tower, dragging my feet every step of the way because I’d much prefer right now to stay in bed and rest. But I promised Grimm.
Grimm, really?” I get to the tower and already see him 18:44

It worked… so easily.
“Go.” I see myself whispering the word.

Chapter 45-2
The bird takes flight, and the view is breathtaking. I’ve done this before, but never knowing it was me, never able to savor it. Now I’m exhilarated, and I understand why Grimm loves these
powers.
The raven soars high, circling the castle. Lights glitter below, guards and townsfolk moving about their business.
When the first rush fades, my thoughts turn to Raphael. I’m not guiding the bird, only seeing through its eyes, yet it seems to know what I want. It glides over the training camp behind the castle, then sweeps across the forest, where the black tree looms as ominous as ever. In the distance, the border guards come into
view.
I wonder which way to go, uncertain of Raphael’s path-then suddenly I’m torn from the raven’s sight, jolted back as if I’d crashed or been struck.
I gasp and stumble, trying to regain my balance.
“What happened?!” I cry out.
“Did you go too far?” Grimm asks.
“Too far?”

“I’m okay.”
“You need to stop!”
“I can’t!”
“This is dangerous, Grimm!”
“It is all I am!”
“What do you mean? It is not—”
“You wouldn’t understand! You may be wolfless, but you’re still a noble. I know your life hasn’t been simple, but you are somebody. I am nobody. I’m not special… not until this. We are descendants of the Raven Wolf King, Valeria. We are special. I am special.”
“You’ve always been somebody to me, Grimm. I’ve never seen you differently.”
“That’s because… you’re a nice person. But most people aren’t like you. They see me as the help, the scum of the earth. Unless you come from a prominent bloodline, if you’re wolfless, you’re expendable. Nobody wants us around unless it’s to fight their wars. I mean, look at the firing squad! They use them as the first line of defense. We’re tools for them.”

to the tree. Could you please wait till then?”
He lets out a frustrated huff. “Okay.” His lips quiver, but I can see how tired he is.
“Thank you.”
We end it there and go back to our rooms to finally rest. But when I’m in my room, the moment I close the door, someone
knocks.
