Chapter 47-1

Chapter 47

~Valeria~

The Raven Wolf King’s son and daughter?

“You lie!”

“I may be many things, but a liar is not one of them,” the Dark King says. “I can assure you of that.”

“No. This is a ploy. A ploy to get us to free you.” I refuse to believe it.

“But… what if it is not, Valeria?” Grimm’s whisper is a small stir in the midst of my anger.

“It’s impossible! How could he—he’s trapped in here! I know. who my father is!”

The nameless man sits on his throne. “Do you wish me to reveal it to you, or do you want to continue to yell at me?”

I whip my head in a sharp refusal. “Anything you say will be a lie.”

“Shut up! What do you know? Don’t you compare me to her!”

Grimm squeezes my hand, calming me.

After an unbearable silence, the King finally speaks. “Let me show you the truth.”

He snaps his fingers, and a storm of crows bursts toward Grimm and me. They strike too fast for us to react, then the world

dissolves.

We are pulled into a vision.

The Raven Wolf King lies beneath a towering oak, his back pressed to the trunk, eyes closed, breaths ragged. Blood drains from the gaping wound in his chest. The battlefield around him is riddled with the fallen—men, wolves, and ravens alike.

A woman approaches barefoot, her slender frame hidden beneath a flowing dress. Long black hair streams in the wind, and eyes dark as night carry immense pain.

“My… beautiful boy. What have they done to you?”

She kneels, lifting the dying King’s head, cradling him in her

arms.

“AAAAH!” Her cry of anguish tears through the setting sky as sherocks his body. “My son, my son… not my son…”

She lifts it once more, letting the moonlight bathe its surface, then lowers it into the earth. Beside it, with careful space left for the seed, she places two metal boxes-the ones that hold his eyes. She buries them all.

Breathing deeply, exhaustion etched across her face, she lifts her gaze to the moon. Still kneeling, she whispers, “Listen to me, to this memory, my son. Every hundred years, three days before the eve of your death, you will return. For three days only. But to remain, the blood of your blood must free you. Let your eyes be their guide.”

She draws a knife and presses it to her throat. “And with this sacrifice of love, I consecrate this ground. May it be protected, unseen by our enemies. I give my life to nurture this soil.”

Her blade cuts, and her blood spills over the freshly sown seed.

The vision quickens.

Her body decays unseen, and from the soil a sprout rises where the seed was buried. Days and nights blur as it grows into a tree, stark and leafless, while ravens gather upon its branches.

Water pools at its roots, shaping the pond we know. In the distance, a castle rises, and with time, the pack houses take form.

One night, the Raven Wolf King emerges from the tre just as:45

Centuries roll on, the tree enduring, the King returning for three days every hundred years-always as promised, always without

purpose.

Until one night, a girl walks the path to the tree and stumbles upon the Dark King. An unsuspecting young girl wandering the tree line, golden hair catching the moonlight, blue eyes wide with wonder, her fine attire betraying wealth. His beauty proves irresistible. Defenseless against the allure of his charm.

I recognize her. Mother… so young. But when did she live in the castle?

I watch as the King speaks all the right words through the night, and she surrenders to him. But when morning breaks, she’s forced to return to her life.

By chance, another maiden wanders the forest that same day, searching for mushrooms. Her garment is plain, without embellishment, and a stained apron hangs at her waist.

Grimm’s mother.

She isn’t as easily swayed as my naïve mother. At first, she keeps her distance, wary of him. Yet slowly, through charm and persistence, he draws her closer, and she softens.

What follows, I wish I hadn’t seen-intimate moments, one beneath the night sky, another in the light of day, both women 45

On the third day, he reveals himself. The Raven Wolf King.

Our mothers gave in, not knowing who this man was. And the man left them ruined, because after that third day, he was nowhere to be found. Unbeknownst to them, he was trapped again, and they were left with bellies that would swell in a few months.

Chapter 47-2

The haze begins to end, and Grimm and I are back, out of those memories or visions. And as I come to, I understand. Mother hates me because of him.

“Now… you see,” he speaks. “You are my children.”

I begin to back away, and the King smiles. “Come back when you are ready to know more. I’ll be waiting. I’m a patient man.”

“Valeria!” Grimm follows.

Suddenly, out of the tree, war seems to rage around us.

“They are attacking!” Grimm seizes my hand, binding us together. His other hand rises, commanding the air. Ravens burst forth, swirling in a furious storm, striking at the enemies with wings and claws.

Grimm looks back at me. “Valeria! Do it! We can save our people, and no one will know it’s us. Everyone is too distracted.”

Taking a deep breath and forcing myself out of my shock, I lift my hand, and suddenly a surge of power crosses from Grimm to me and then from me to him. I feel it. A sudden dark wave descends on the fight. A sea of ravens, unlike anything we’ve ever been able to control before. Together, our power is pure terfor. Like a swarm of man-eating locusts, the ravens desceh 45

“Hey, it was a desperate moment.”

“I get it… sister.”

This information is still a shock to me, but I can’t linger on it. We give our attention back to the fight.

“So many. This was planned,” Grimm says.

“Yeah.” I agree. There’s no doubt about it.

I look at my guns. “I’m out.” I throw them on the ground.

I left the ammunition with the assault rifle. Stupid me.

Grimm takes the crossbow off his back and hands it to me. “Cover me. Let’s get to the castle.”

He leads the way, shooting what I can’t see. I turn and watch our back.

“It’s too many!” Grimm shouts, and then I hear his gun run out of bullets.
