The Raven Wolf King: Wolfless novel Chapter 48

Chapter 48

~Valeria~

“Grimm!”

Raphael holds my hand. “What… is happening?”

Ravens swirl in the sky and start to dance to Grimm’s sway. They come down like a fist and begin attacking the enemy, leaving their bodies stripped almost to the bone.

Every single person, even those in wolf form, stops to watch.

“What is he doing?” Raphael mutters.

“Saving the King,” I whisper.

“He… is…” Raphael stares, too stunned to finish.

“Yes,” I say. “I wasn’t crazy that night. Grimm is a descendant of the Raven Wolf King. And so am I.”

Raphael looks at me, torn between believing and doubting. My eyes turn back to the battle.

The man in golden armor stops short, struck by the same 18:45

foe.

“He’s losing control!” I shout. “Grimm!”

Raphael holds me back. “You’ll get hurt!”

“I’ll be fine!” I break free of his grip and run through the storm of black birds, arms covering my face. I’m hit from every side by what feels like baseballs. The ravens aren’t even attacking-it’s like they’ve lost all sense, flying in every direction.

Breaking through the madness, I reach Grimm, kneeling, curled up in a ball.

“Grimm!” I put my arms around him.

“I can’t… I can’t… control it!” he cries out.

“Let it go! Grimm! Release the power!” \

“I CAAAAN’T!” he screams.

A shadow towers over us. A man. His hand strikes the back

of Grimm’s neck. Grimm collapses, unconscious. The ravens scatter at once, vanishing into the sky and forest. The madness is

gone.

“Interesting. Seems we found our killer.” My eyes finally recognize the pale man. Godfrey.

“I don’t care. But Grimm is innocent! He didn’t do it!”

“My lord…” Godfrey speaks. “The boy showed the exact kind of power that has been used for these murders. I must take him.”

“It’s not him!” I shout.

“Valeria,” Raphael turns to me. “He needs to take him.”

“But-”

“Look around you. Everyone saw. Everyone will believe he’s the killer. If you can prove otherwise, we can speak to my father. But for now, he needs to be restrained.”

“Then so do I. I have the same pow-” Raphael puts a hand on my mouth.

“Don’t. You can’t help him if you’re in the same position.”

He’s right. I force myself to calm down, to think clearly. I hold my composure as I watch Grimm being taken away.

Raphael gently checks my face. “I’m going to kill him.”

“I’m fine,” I tell him. “He hits like a bitch. My mother has a deadlier hook than he does.”

“Valeria.”

“I was just in this fight like everyone else. I’m staying and helping.”

“Okay… okay. Just stay close to the castle. They could launch another attack.”

I nod, but my eyes skim the mess. The fight is over. The death of the man in gold armor won us the battle. What’s left of the enemy is subdued. Some of our people run to put out the fire, others lie on the ground, wounded and screaming.

“Valeria?” Raphael mutters.

“How?” I ask. “How did they do this?” I don’t understand how they could be this strong.

“General Brimstone, Fera’s father, defaulted,” Raphael says.

“What?!”

“Fera and her mother left in the middle of the night a few days ago.”

I remember the heated argument they were having before. “You… and her were fighting.”

He closes his eyes and sighs in relief, but he still looks concerned. “I have not seen Jade. She and Meryl went for a run. They were told to stay close to the pack but…”

I feel no concern, mostly because the only thing on my mind is what I learned tonight.

He is not my real father. Does he know?

“I… am heading back downstairs, and I’ll keep an eye out, but you should go rest,” I tell him. “You’re still not at your best.”

He slowly nods. I turn, but before I can leave, he takes my hand. “I am glad you are okay, Valeria.”

“…thank you. I’m glad you are okay, too.”

Back downstairs, I spot Stephan.

“There you are!” He seems winded. “I’ve been looking everywhere for you.”

“Why?”

“Because! I wanted to make sure you were okay. You were at the border, and I was so worried,” he says.

I smile. “I’m okay. But did you know about the attack?”

She gasps, “What are you going to do?!”

I don’t answer. All I know is that I’m going to get justice. There will be no forgiveness for someone who will never be sorry. I make my way up to my parents’ room, where Father loiters next to the window.

“Valeria!” Mother shouts after me as I ram through the doors.

Father looks at me, startled, and then at Mother, who followed
