Chapter 444 Side Story: A Visit Back to the Old Estate
In the past, he’d always given the Turners some grace because they had at least raised his daughter into a grown woman.
Looking at it now, there was no reason for that.
The Turners deserved everything that was coming to them.
“All right. Whatever you say. Anyone who hurts my daughter has to pay for it.”
Ruby’s eyes filled with tears as she listened, and she nodded.
Early the next morning, Leonard went straight to Larissa’s room.
He looked down at his daughter’s peaceful sleeping face and let out a small sigh.
Thank God it had only been a dream.
He made himself a silent promise to protect her-from now on, he wouldn’t let anyone hurt her again.
He was going to make sure none of what he’d seen in that dream ever became real.
The second he stepped out of her room, Larissa opened her eyes.
What had gotten into her father?
Why had the look in his eyes been so full of grief?
Over the days that followed, Leonard and Ruby doted on Larissa with an intensity that went beyond anything before. They fussed over her in every small, attentive way they could, trying to make up for all the lost years.
One morning, right after Larissa finished breakfast, the call came in from the old estate. Truman wanted Leonard to bring her over.
Larissa looked at her father, confused.
‘Dad, did he say what this was about?
‘Grandpa has never liked me. I can’t imagine him wanting to see me.”
Leonard was wondering the same thing.
‘It has to be something. If you really don’t want to go, I’ll handle it for you. I’m not going to make you do anything you don’t want to do.”
Larissa thought about it, then shook her head. “It’s fine, Dad. I’ll come with you.”
Truman had never truly welcomed her back into the Sowles. This was the first time he’d ever actively summoned her to the old estate. She couldn’t begin to guess what he wanted.
When they arrived, she followed her father into the living room.
Truman was seated in the main chair, leaning on his cane.
His color still carried traces of weakness, but he looked a world better than he had a few days ago.
The moment he saw Larissa, a smile spread across his face.
But she saw the warm, grateful smile on her father’s face, and she spoke in a calm, even voice.
‘I accept your apology.”
Right then, a young woman walked out of the kitchen carrying a bowl of medicinal broth, her eyes carrying a flicker of hostility. She walked to Truman’s side and spoke in a carefully sweet tone.
‘Grandpa, this is a tonic broth I sourced all the way from the Wonder Doctor himself.
“It’s been only a few months since we last saw each other, and look how weak your body has gotten.
“You need proper care.”
Truman patted her hand.
“Thank you, Hazel. I didn’t even know you knew the Wonder Doctor personally. This is your cousin, Larissa. I want the two of you to get along from now on.”
So this was Uncle Roy’s eldest daughter.
But wasn’t Roy in custody?
The timing of Hazel showing up was not an accident.
Larissa gave Hazel a polite smile. Hazel’s smile in return was all sweetness.
“Larissa, it’s been so long. What a stroke of luck that you found your way back to the Sowles. Congratulations…”
