What she hadn’t expected was that he’d managed to rebuild everything in just five years. Not only had he reestablished the Mercer Group, but he’d also made a fortune doing it.

So he wasn’t just lucky. He had a brain, too.

Nina smiled faintly. “I was busy with school over there, so we didn’t really keep in touch.”

Chase could tell she had no interest in continuing the conversation. The classmate who had tried to help him out picked up on it as well and didn’t push further.

For a moment, the room fell awkwardly quiet.

“Why don’t we have a toast?” someone suggested.

“Yeah, let’s do that!”

Everyone quickly played along, trying to lift the mood. Nina stood up easily enough and clinked glasses with the others.

“Nina, you and Chase go way back–you’ve got a different kind of bond than the rest of us. Why don’t you two have a drink together?”

Someone chimed in from the side.

Nina wasn’t too keen on the idea.

Charlotte, remembering how Chase had hurt Nina over Katrina before, stepped in. “By the way, Chase, where’s Katrina? Didn’t she come with you? You’ve been married, what, five or six years now? Why didn’t you bring your child? I even got a gift ready.”

At the mention of his child, a few of the other girls joined in.

Class A had been the top class at Linholt High. Most of the people here had gone on to do well for themselves–each of them someone of note in their own circles.

Take Charlotte, for example–she was now a senior executive at a real estate group. No one here was afraid of stepping on toes. It wasn’t just that they all came from strong backgrounds; they each had respectable careers of their own.

Chase was about to respond when a voice suddenly came from the doorway.

“Wilder, we’re here.”

Katrina’s gentle voice carried into the room. She pushed the door open, and beside her was a little boy she was holding by the hand.

He looked about five, chubby–cheeked, with features that faintly resembled Chase.

The moment Nina saw him, her eyes dimmed for a fraction of a second.

In her past life, Ewan had been just as adorable.

But her Ewan… was never coming back.

“Chase, I had guests at home earlier, so I got held up on the way.”

Katrina walked in wearing an elegant, high–end dress. Her long, straight hair fell to her waist, and the pearls she wore were clearly worth a fortune. She carried herself like a proper society lady.

“What are you doing here?” Chase frowned, his displeasure obvious–especially when he saw she’d brought the child.

“It’s a class reunion. Of course I’d come.”

She had a server bring over a child’s chair and sat down without waiting for anyone to respond.

The others could all sense her air of superiority, and it didn’t sit well with them.

Nina, on the other hand, wasn’t surprised in the slightest. She knew exactly what Katrina was like. Now that the Mercer family had risen again, Katrina saw herself as above everyone else- as the wife of the head of Mercer Group.

What she didn’t realize was that even with the Mercer family’s comeback, they weren’t all that far above anyone in this room.

Everyone here had wealth in the millions, if not tens of millions, waiting to be inherited. No one was particularly impressed by a woman who’d climbed her way up through a man.

Nina stayed silent.

Just then, Wilder pointed at her and asked, “Mom, who is she?”

“This is Ms. Tann. Say hello.”

Katrina said it calmly–but the next second, Wilder suddenly lashed out, hurling the glass in his hand straight at Nina.
