“I’m really sorry about earlier. The child didn’t know any better. Nina, let me offer you a drink.”

She held her glass out. Nina picked hers up as well, but didn’t drink.

Katrina finished hers in one go. Nina simply set her glass back down.

Everyone could tell the mood had shifted. Charlotte leaned in and whispered, “Nina, should we just leave?”

Leave?

Then they’d miss the show.

Nina smiled faintly.

Didn’t Katrina love showing off her status as Mrs. Mercer?

Fine. She’d let her have her moment.

“Drinking with Mrs. Mercer alone doesn’t seem quite right,” Nina said lightly, turning to Chase. “Mr. Mercer, I should toast you, too.”

Chase froze for a beat.

Around the table, people exchanged knowing looks.

After all, who here didn’t remember how Nina had chased after Chase back in high school? It hadn’t ended well–but now, years later, it was obvious Chase still had feelings for her.

He hadn’t taken his eyes off Nina the entire night.

Katrina’s expression tightened.

Right in front of her, Chase slowly raised his glass.

“Mrs. Mercer,” Nina added with a faint smile, “you’re not going to be jealous, are you? We’re all classmates. Think of it as letting bygones be bygones.”

That neat little turn flipped Katrina’s own tactic back on her, and the smile on her face faltered.

“Nina,” Chase said, rising to his feet, “this one’s for you.”

Everyone could hear the emotion he didn’t say out loud. It landed like a slap–one that stripped away whatever dignity Katrina still had as Mrs. Mercer.

Just as Chase was about to sit back down, Nina spoke up.

“Mr. Mercer, how did you build everything up over the past few years? I’m really curious. Why don’t we exchange contact info? If the Tann family has any projects in the future, we’d be happy to work with you.”

The moment she mentioned swapping contacts, Chase pulled out his phone. “Sure. I’ll add you.”

“Chase…” Katrina tried to interrupt, but the words wouldn’t come. She could only watch as Nina added him.

Biting her lip, she stayed silent.

Nina glanced at Chase’s phone and smiled. “Wow, Mr. and Mrs. Mercer really are close. Even your wallpaper is of Mrs. Mercer and your child. Looks like you’ve got a happy, perfect family.”

That’s what she said–but she knew better.

Chase wasn’t the type to put his wife and child on his phone, especially not when things between him and Katrina were this tense.

Katrina must’ve made him change it, just so everyone would see he was a married man with a family.

Sure enough, Chase’s expression tightened at the mention of it. He quickly put his phone away, clearly not wanting to dwell on it.

“Mr. Mercer, it’s been a while since you’ve visited the Tann family, hasn’t it?” Nina went on. “Why don’t you come by tonight? Be my guest.”

This time, Katrina couldn’t hold back. “That won’t be necessary! Chase and I already have plans tonight.”

“Is that so? What a pity.” Nina shook her head lightly, playing along.

Beside her, Charlotte watched Katrina get shut down and felt a surge of satisfaction.
