Katrina looked at Cecilia, then at Chase, who made no attempt to defend her. Her expression turned utterly grim.
“Either way… don’t even think about letting Nina into this house. I won’t allow it.”
With that, she grabbed Wilder and headed upstairs.
Chase grew more and more irritated.
How had he ended up marrying someone like this? Was she out of her mind?
“Chase, tell me honestly–do you and Nina still have a chance?”
Cecilia had long since lost all patience with Katrina. Now that the Mercer family had climbed back to the top, their social circle was especially sensitive to gossip. The last thing she wanted was people talking about them having a wife who was nothing more than a high school dropout from a humble background.
Only someone like Nina, with her status, was worthy of her son.
“I don’t know,” Chase said flatly. “I just know I’m sick of Katrina.”
For more than five years, Katrina had tried to control him at every turn. The moment he had any contact with another woman, she became paranoid and suspicious. She was nothing like the girl he’d known back in high school.
Maybe getting together with her had been a mistake from the very beginning.
“It’s fine,” Cecilia said, waving it off. “If you’re really done with her, I’ll support you. I’ll find a way to get you divorced. Didn’t you and Nina reconnect? Then you’d better make an effort. Bring her home. Only Nina is worthy of the Mercer family.”
Cecilia beamed at the thought. Even Chase found himself drifting into a fantasy.
If he could marry Nina, he’d be willing to give up everything he had now.
At the same time—
Nina returned to the Tann residence, rolling her sore shoulders. The moment she stepped inside, a loud pop exploded in her ears.

“Surprise!”

Startled, she looked up to see Caleb holding a party popper, his strikingly handsome face- one that could turn heads anywhere–lit up with a carefree grin. “Well? Surprised? Didn’t see that coming, did you?”
Caleb had bright, lively eyes and a beauty that could rival any woman’s. Among their fellow international students, he’d always been the center of attention. Back when they were abroad, the two of them had gone from clashing at first meeting to becoming inseparable, the closest of friends.
Nina pressed her fingers to her temple. “Who said you could come to my house?”
“Mr. and Mrs. Tann invited me,” Caleb said easily. “They told me to come over as a guest, so I did.”
“You flew all the way back from overseas just because they invited you?” Nina shot him a look. “Caleb, are you insane?”
He clutched his chest dramatically. “I’m lovesick–for you. One day without you, and I can’t go
on.”
“Nina, Caleb, what are you two doing standing at the door? Come in already!”
Esther called out from inside. She had prepared a lavish dinner, though by now Caleb had already made a serious dent in it.
By the time Nina walked in, the servants were already starting to clear the table.
Compared to five years ago, Esther hadn’t changed much–just a few strands of gray now visible in her hair. Marvin, on the other hand, had picked up some wrinkles, and even his waistline had thickened.
Nina hadn’t been home once in all these years. Seeing how much her parents had aged made her nose sting. “Mom, Dad, I’m back.”
“Then go upstairs, take a bath, and get some rest,” Esther said gently. “You just flew all that way -you must be exhausted.”
Esther was pregnant now. Nina’s gaze fell on her mother’s rounded belly, and she smiled.
In her previous life, her mom had never gotten pregnant again. This time, without the Mercer Group weighing them down, she was going to have a younger sibling.
The thought lifted her spirits.
