Watching her dart upstairs without a second thought, Caleb clicked his tongue. “Heartless.”
Upstairs, Caleb sat there with a chess piece in hand, hesitating over his next move. Across from him, Marvin suddenly asked, “What do you think of my Nina?”
“Nina?” Caleb barely looked up, still focused on the board. “She’s great. Smart, capable, pretty good at cards. Only downside is her brain works a little too well.”
“And would you consider dating her?”
The piece slipped from Caleb’s fingers and clattered to the floor.
“Dating Nina?”
His lips trembled. “Mr. Tann… is Nina… having trouble finding someone to marry?”
Marvin’s face darkened instantly.
“Mr. Tann, is she sick? Or–does she actually like women? Just tell me the truth. I can handle it! I’ll make sure she gets proper treatment, takes her meds, and stays positive about life-”
“What nonsense are you spouting?”
Marvin waved him off, visibly annoyed. “Go on, get out of here. It’s late–go home.”
Caleb bolted from the room as if he’d just been granted a pardon.
On the second floor, Nina stepped out of her room in her nightdress–only to run straight into Caleb as he rushed out.
He grabbed her wrist in a panic. “This is bad!”
Nina glanced down at his hand on her wrist and frowned. “What are you doing?”
“Your dad’s trying to marry you off to me!”

She shook off his hand, thoroughly fed up, and turned to head back to her room, ready to shut the door in his face. Then Caleb suddenly added, “Jensen Grey’s back in Linholt. Aren’t you going to see him?”
At the name Jensen Grey, Nina froze for a moment, a strange sense of disorientation washing over her.
Five years ago, Jensen hadn’t even had the last name, Grey.
“Not close. Not interested.”
She dropped the words flatly and went back into her room, climbing onto the bed.
Her gaze landed on the large teddy bear sitting there, and she fell silent.
Five years… she had no idea what Jensen looked like now. Or whether he’d been doing well all these years with the Grey family.
Just then, her phone buzzed.
Nina picked it up from the bedside table and glanced at the screen.
It was Chase.
It was already eleven at night. His message was simple: [You there?]
She tapped on his profile. His Instagram background had been changed–the photos of Katrina and their child were gone.
Nina let out a cold laugh.
Chase… oh, Chase.
In her previous life, he’d insisted on marrying Katrina. He’d even gone so far as to kill his own two children and send her to a mental institution.
Now he’d gotten exactly what he wanted–married the woman he’d always wanted, at the perfect time in his life. So why the regret?
Nina didn’t reply, but Chase wasn’t giving up. He sent another message–an address.
