“I grew up with Nina,” Chase snapped. “Mr. Rhodes, you’ve only known her for five years. What makes you think you have a better claim?”
“My opinion doesn’t matter,” Caleb said lightly. “Nina’s does.”
He turned to her. “Nina, you tell him. Between Chase and me–who would
you choose?”
The question was sharp, leaving no room to dodge.
Nina slipped her arm through Caleb’s and answered without hesitation, “Caleb, of course. Mr. Mercer is a married man, isn’t he?”
She said it on purpose, and it landed. A flicker of pain crossed Chase’s eyes.
“Didn’t we say we’d go for a run this morning?” Nina looked up at Caleb, smiling.
Caleb played along perfectly and took her with him. As they left, he tossed over his shoulder, “Mr. Mercer, we’ll be on our way. Feel free to reach out sometime.”
Nina tugged on Caleb’s sleeve, signaling him to move.
He didn’t bother continuing the conversation with Chase. It wasn’t until they turned the corner that Nina finally let go of him.
“Aren’t you the one who said you don’t run? Why jump in like that?” she asked.
“I saw Chase bothering you, so I heroically came down to help. And this is the thanks I get?” Caleb shot back.
“Oh, wow. Then thank you–really. Much appreciated, Mr. Rhodes.”
Nina had originally planned to give Chase a little encouragement, just to see how far he’d be willing to go for her. She hadn’t expected Caleb to show up and derail it–but at least it had sparked a sense of urgency in Chase.
Not a bad outcome, all things considered.
“Oh, right,” Caleb added, “your birthday’s in a couple of days. Mr. and Mrs. Tann have booked a five–star hotel to throw you a party. You should be thrilled.”
“Why am I just hearing about this?”

“You went to bed too early last night, so they didn’t get a chance to tell you. You’ve been away for five years–this is a good opportunity to meet some of Linholt’s elite. You’ll be crossing paths with them sooner or later.”
Nina wasn’t particularly interested in socializing, but she knew she couldn’t avoid it forever. She nodded. “Got it.”
Seeing her lack of enthusiasm, Caleb reached over and tugged at the corner of her mouth. “Cheer up. You’re the birthday girl the day after tomorrow–you can’t go around looking like that.”
Nina forced a smile. “Thanks, Mr. Rhodes.”
“You’re a big star, Nina. You’ve got to dress up and carry yourself properly on your birthday—”
Caleb kept rambling, and Nina finally covered her ears. “Okay, okay, I get it! I still have my run to finish–talk later!”
She took off as she spoke, jogging away.
From behind her, Caleb called out, “Nina! You’d better dress up properly the day after tomorrow! Don’t show up like you used to–going to class in your pajamas!”
By then, Nina had already put on her headphones.
Of course, she’d dress up for her birthday. It was a once–a–year event, and she planned to invite quite a few old acquaintances.
Chase. Katrina.
She hadn’t forgotten the humiliation Chase had put her through in her previous life.
She still remembered it clearly–Katrina’s birthday party after returning to the country. Chase had shown up in formal wear, dancing with Katrina in front of everyone. By the end of the night, it was common knowledge that the two of them hadn’t returned from the hotel.
And she, his wife, had waited at home like a fool, expecting him to come back.
This time, she would make sure Chase and Katrina experienced that same kind of pain for themselves.
She wanted them to know exactly what it felt like–to be betrayed by a husband, to be played for a fool.
Early in the morning, Chase returned to the Mercer house. Katrina had been sitting in the living room all night, not sleeping for a minute. The moment she saw him, she demanded,

“Where did you go after you got drunk last night?”
Her accusatory tone made Chase frown. “Do I need to report my whereabouts to you?”
