He couldn’t understand it.
Why hadn’t Nina come?
She used to like him so much…

Early the next morning, Nina went out for a run and spotted Chase slumped outside the Tann house, looking completely worn out.
He suddenly grabbed her ankle. “Why… why didn’t you come see me?”
The smell of alcohol hit her immediately. Nina frowned, clearly displeased. It was nauseating, but she forced herself to endure it. “I had the bar owner call Katrina last night to pick you up, didn’t I?”
Chase gazed at her with what he clearly thought was deep affection. He reached up and grabbed her arm. “Nina, I know I was wrong. Can you… Forgive me?”
Nina let out a small laugh at the look in his eyes.
He must have used the same lines to win Katrina back before.
“Chase, wake up. You have a wife and a child. This isn’t possible.”
She turned to leave, but Chase rushed in front of her, blocking her path.
“As long as you come back to me, none of that matters!”
His words were so absurd that Nina suddenly thought of her past life–of how he had abandoned her and their two children.
“So what you’re saying,” she replied evenly, “is that for me, you’d divorce Katrina? You’d even give up your own son?”

It took five years for him to realize that the person he truly loved had never been Katrina.
Katrina had only ever been a way for him to feel like he’d broken free from his mother’s control.
“Chase, Katrina and Wilder are your family. I hope you live well together. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had the bar owner call Katrina last night.”
Nina put on a faintly regretful expression, then lightly patted the back of his hand, almost absentmindedly.
As expected, Chase immediately grabbed her hand. Overcome with emotion, he pulled her into a tight embrace.
“Nina, I know you’re doing this for my sake. I know you still have feelings for me. I don’t want anyone else—I just want to be with you!”
He buried his face against her, greedily breathing in her scent.
Nina frowned, about to shove Chase away, when Caleb suddenly appeared.
He yanked Chase off her and punched him hard in the left cheek. “It’s broad daylight, Mr. Mercer. Show some restraint,” he said coldly.
Then he stepped in front of Nina, shielding her.
Caleb might come off as easygoing, but he could handle himself. Back when they were overseas, he’d helped Nina deal with more than a few persistent admirers. He moved through it all with practiced ease.
“Caleb?” Chase narrowed his eyes, a dangerous edge creeping in.
