Tonight, Katrina had dressed in her most extravagant gown, draped in jewels, trying to present herself like a refined society lady.

But her features lacked that kind of elegance. At best, she had a delicate, girl–next–door look. All the heavy jewelry only made her seem gaudy.

“Behave yourself at Nina’s birthday party tonight,” Chase warned. “If you offend the Tann family, I won’t be able to help you.”

Katrina let out a cold laugh. “You’re defending Nina this much–afraid I’ll embarrass her? She’s the one seducing a married man. If she has the nerve to do it, why shouldn’t I say it?”

“Watch your mouth.”

Chase shot her a sharp look. “Nina’s been more than generous–she doesn’t even want to argue with you. If she hadn’t specifically asked for you to come, do you think I would’ve invited you?”

“Chase, why bother arguing with someone like her?” Cecilia cut in. “If it weren’t for the fact that she’s Wilder’s mother, the Mercer family would’ve thrown her out long ago.”

With that, Cecilia pulled Chase along and walked ahead.

Left behind, Katrina clenched her jaw, gathered her skirt, and hurried after them, nearly tripping as she struggled to keep up.

Inside the ballroom, Chase spotted Nina immediately. She stood out effortlessly in the crowd, her gold gown catching the light, her whole presence impossible to ignore.

Katrina saw it too–and didn’t bother hiding her jealousy. It wasn’t just Chase; nearly every man in the room had their eyes on Nina.

“Nina, Chase is here,” Caleb murmured at her side.

Nina had expected him to come early. When she noticed Cecilia and Katrina with him, she raised an eyebrow.

“Of course not,” Nina replied easily. “You were angry–it’s understandable. Anyone would’ve reacted the same way.”

“Exactly. You’re a big star now. Even if you once had feelings for Chase, there’s no way you’d go after a married man. As for what Cecilia said yesterday, please don’t take it to heart. That was just tension between us as mother–in–law and daughter–in–law–she said some things in the heat of the moment. Right, Cecilia?”

Katrina tossed the question to her.

Cecilia wanted to deny it, but this wasn’t the place to admit she’d considered replacing her daughter–in–law. Her expression darkened, but she said nothing.

Katrina pressed on, raising her voice just enough for others nearby to hear. “Chase has a great reputation in Linholt–he’s a devoted husband and father. He’s been nothing but good to the children and me. Cecilia, I know I upset you yesterday, so let me apologize today.”

She knew exactly what Cecilia cared about most–her pride.
