Chapter 126 She’s A Bit Out Of Your League
Nina smiled lightly. “Getting ready takes time. Sorry to keep you waiting, Mr. Rhodes.”
“At least you know that,” he said, then held out his arm.
She took it, and the two of them walked into the ballroom together.
For a moment, it felt like everyone else faded into the background.
“If those two aren’t a couple, it’s almost a crime.”
“Well, there goes any hope for my son.”
“I heard they might even announce their wedding date tonight.”

Nina caught the whispers around her and leaned closer to Caleb. “So I’m getting engaged to you? Funny–I don’t remember agreeing to that.”
“News to me too,” Caleb said, clearly baffled.
“These Linholt tabloids really do just make things up.”
Just then, Caleb spotted a well–dressed older woman approaching with a young man in tow. A closer look, and he recognized him immediately–it was Miles, the same arrogant guy from yesterday.
“Ms. Tann! Ms. Tann!”
Beatrice hurried forward, dragging Miles along. She quickly smoothed her appearance before speaking. “Ms. Tann, this is my son, Miles. Do you remember him?”
With so many guests tonight, Nina kept a polite smile on her face at all times. She nodded lightly. “Of course I remember. We ran into each other at the boutique yesterday. If I recall correctly, Miles had his girlfriend with him, didn’t he?”
She brought it up on purpose.
Beatrice waved it off at once. “Oh, no, no–you’ve misunderstood. Miles has always had a soft spot for you. How could he possibly have a girlfriend? The girl yesterday was just a second
cousin.”

As she spoke, she nudged Miles sharply. “See? This is what happens when you don’t explain things properly. You’ve made Ms. Tann misunderstand.”
“Mrs. Huntington,” Caleb cut in coolly, “whether it’s a misunderstanding or not doesn’t really matter. Nina isn’t going to choose Miles anyway. And as far as I know, the Huntington and Tann families aren’t that close.”
He didn’t bother softening the blow.
Beatrice didn’t get angry. Instead, she smiled thinly. “The Rhodes and Tann families do seem quite close. But Mr. Rhodes, you’re not Mrs. Rhodes’s biological son. Given Ms. Tann’s status, I’m afraid she’s a bit out of your league.”
The moment she took a jab at Caleb’s background, Nina’s expression turned cold.
“Mrs. Huntington, Caleb is my friend. My parents treat him like their own son. Before you say things like that, you might want to think about the consequences.”
Sensing Nina’s displeasure, Beatrice immediately backtracked. “My fault, entirely my fault. I must be talking nonsense tonight. Mr. Rhodes is your friend–I shouldn’t have said such things. It’s your birthday, Ms. Tann. Please don’t take offense.”
Watching his mother lower herself to appease Nina, Miles bristled. Still, this was Nina’s event- he didn’t dare cause a scene.
Before long, Beatrice read the room and quickly pulled him away.
“That Nina,” she muttered under her breath, irritation boiling over. “Defending that Rhodes bastard at every turn–I don’t know what she’s thinking.”
Miles was just as displeased. “Our Huntington family isn’t inferior to anyone. Mom, there’s no need for us to act like this. Just wait–I’ll make the Tanns beg to marry Nina to me.”
In this circle, Miles was known as a useless playboy. When it came to dealing with women who wouldn’t cooperate, he and his friends had plenty of tricks.
