Katrina said it on purpose. “Back in school, Jensen and Nina were a thing. Sure, he was taken back by the Grey family later, but feelings don’t just disappear. Maybe he’s here to make things right with her. Who knows–they might even get back together.”

Chase’s expression darkened immediately, a sense of unease creeping in.

He hadn’t forgotten how, back in school, Jensen had always taken Nina’s side. Anyone with eyes could see she meant something different to him.

If Jensen really came back to pursue her… what if Nina softened and said yes?

“Nina, that’s Jensen?” Caleb nudged her, curiosity written all over his face. “Your taste wasn’t bad at all. He’s way better than Chase.”

Nina didn’t respond.

Jensen… why come now?

In six years, they hadn’t crossed paths even once.

Just as Caleb assumed Jensen would head straight for Nina, everyone watched as he walked right past her and went up to Marvin and Esther instead, never sparing her a glance.

Nina let out a faint, self–deprecating smile.

Of course. He was now the head of Grey Group, with a fiancée at his side. Why would he show up for her birthday?

More likely, he was here to talk business with Tann Group, to maintain connections in Linholt.

“Damn it,” Caleb muttered. “I just gave him credit, and now I take it all back. Thought he was better than Chase, but looks like kids raised by the Mercer family are all the same.”

“Enough,” Nina said flatly. “Jensen and I haven’t been in touch for years. It’s normal he wouldn’t come over. Honestly, if he did, I wouldn’t even know what to say.”

She lost interest. While no one was paying attention, she called over a waiter and took another glass of champagne. Then she set her original glass back on the tray and quietly said something to him.

Not far away, Miles watched her finish the champagne, barely able to contain his excitement.

At this rate, Nina would be his tonight.

As Nina passed by Chase, she lightly hooked a finger against his hand. It was barely a touch, but enough to send a ripple through him.

Katrina had already been annoyed watching Nina walk past him. Now she frowned and said sharply, “Chase, you’re staying by my side tonight. Don’t even think about going anywhere.”

“I’m stepping out for a smoke,” Chase replied, clearly irritated. “I’ll be back in a bit.”

“You-!”

Katrina was about to lose her temper, but a well–dressed older woman approached and pulled her into conversation. All she could do was glare at Chase’s retreating back.

Outside, a cool night breeze swept through the hotel grounds. Nina wandered over to the fountain and sat down casually.

As expected, Chase followed. The moment he saw her sitting there alone, he took off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders.

“It’s cold out here,” he said. “Why are you sitting here by yourself?”

Nina’s cheeks were slightly flushed. She touched her face, still warm, and said, “Maybe… I had a bit too much to drink. Just wanted some fresh air.”

Chase looked at her with concern. “It’s your birthday. If you don’t want to drink, I can do it for you.”

Nina smiled at him.
