The library was always quiet, so the loud noise immediately drew everyone’s attention.

But when they saw it was Chase, no one dared to say a word. Everyone knew not to mess with him, so they all pretended not to see or hear anything.

What do you want?Nina asked, clearly annoyed.

She was already sick of seeing Chase and Katrina all over each other in class. Now she’d come to the library to escape them, but Chase still wouldn’t leave her alone.

You set Katrina up with that chocolate incident, didn’t you?Chase demanded, his tone accusatory.

Nina laughed in disbelief. What makes you think it was me?

Besides Katrina, you’re the only one who touched those chocolates. Don’t lie to me.”

Nina stared at him, exasperated. Why would you suspect me instead of Katrina?

Chase looked at her with pure contempt. Katrina is kind and gentle. You, on the other hand, used her kindness to trick her into nearly drowning before. Now you’re drugging chocolates to frame her. I never realized how evil you are, Nina.

Listening to his disdain, Nina smiled bitterly.

She never thought Chase would see her as nothing more than a cruel, selfish, and twisted person.

They’d grown up together, after all. They’d played together throughout preschool and elementary school. Even though they’d grown apart after attending different middle schools, she never thought he’d speak to her like this.

Nina closed her book, calm and unbothered. If you had any sense, you’d investigate this yourself. If you find proof I did it, go ahead and report me. But until you have evidence, stop playing the heroit’s pathetic.”

You!

Chase snapped, slamming his hand on the table and raising his arm to strike Nina.

In an instant, someone grabbed his arm. Jensen said coldly, This is a library, not a place for you to cause trouble.

Nina froze. Looking up, she saw a flash of cold anger in Jensen’s eyes.

Who the hell are you? Get off me!

Chase tried to pull away, but Jensen’s grip was too strong. He struggled several times but couldn’t break free.

Jensen spoke calmly, It’s the librarian’s job to keep order here. Do you want me to hit the alarm?

Nina then noticed the red armband on Jensen’s sleeve that read Librarian.

She remembered the school paid librarians, and only students from lowincome families took those jobs.

No wonder she never saw Jensen after classhe was here working.

Life for Jensen in the Mercer household was even worse than she’d thought.

Chase glanced between Jensen and Nina, then sneered, What? You two are actually together now?

He let out a mocking laugh. Nina, you begged for my attention nonstop before, and now you’re running to this bastard? You really aren’t picky. But it doesn’t matteryou’re just the trash I threw away. Trash belongs with a bastard. Perfect match.

Before Chase finished speaking, Jensen punched him hard in the face.

The blow was strong enough to send Chase crashing to the floor, stunned.

Afraid the situation would escalate, Nina jumped up. Jensen! Stop!

Jensen had already been sent to Class F for fighting. One more incident would almost certainly get him suspended.

Worse, Cecilia would use it as an excuse to kick him out of school entirely.
