Chase still looked ready to attack, so Nina quickly said, “You forgot? One more disciplinary mark, and you’ll get expelled! What’ll happen to Katrina if you’re gone?”
At the sound of Katrina’s name, Chase’s raised hand froze mid–air.
Nina knew she’d hit his weak spot. She took Jensen’s arm. “Come on. Help me find another place to study.”
This time, Chase didn’t follow. Once he was gone, Nina found an empty seat and sat down.
Bad luck! Just plain bad luck!
“I have to get back to work,” Jensen said, his tone flat.
For some reason, Nina could tell he was upset.
And who could blame him? No one would take being called a bastard in public lightly.
Nina stepped toward him. “What Chase said was nonsense. He’s just twisted inside. Don’t let it get to you.”
“I’m used to it,” Jensen replied, acting like it didn’t bother him.
“You’re a librarian?”
“Yep.”
“Why didn’t
you tell me before?”
“You never asked.”
“Oh… right.”
Jensen started restocking shelves. Nina followed, asking, “You’re way too smart for Class F. You should be in A. Why did you get into a fight?”
“I forgot.”
He clearly didn’t want to talk about it. Nina forced a small smile to keep the mood from getting too awkward.

Watching Jensen work so hard, Nina thought about how tough his life must be at the Mercer
house.
After a moment, she said, “Jensen, I know you’re brilliant. Can you do me a favor?”
“Say it.”
“I… I need help studying. Could you tutor me every night? I’ll pay you 100 dollars a session. How does that sound?”
A hundred dollars per session was top dollar for a high school tutor.
Jensen looked at her. “You’re always top ten in the grade. You don’t need tutoring.”
“I’ve been slacking off! I’m bombing my practice tests. I won’t even make the top hundred at this rate…” Nina looked sincere. “Don’t worry. If I pass finals, I’ll give you 1,000 dollars total. Please help me!”
Jensen hesitated, seeing she wasn’t lying.
Nina added, “If it’s too much during the week, we can do weekends instead.”
“…Fine.”
Nina lit up the second he agreed. “It’s a deal!”
With Jensen tutoring her, finals were as good as won.
Just as Nina turned to go back to studying, Jensen suddenly broke into a violent coughing fit. She looked up and saw his face was pale, and his cheeks and neck were flushed from coughing.
“Jensen?”
Nina reached out to feel his forehead, but he flinched and slapped her hand away. “Don’t!”
Nina froze. Just then, another librarian rushed over, panicked. “Jensen! I told you to wait for me to get your medicine! Why did you run off?”
“Medicine? What’s wrong with him?”
