“You’re just jealous!” Beatrice shot back. “Jealous because Miles and Nina are so close! I’m telling you right now–Nina loves my son. In the end, he’s the only one she’s going to marry!”

Beatrice showed no sign of backing down, prompting Esther to turn toward her daughter.

“Nina, tell them what really happened,” she said.

Nina met Beatrice’s gaze and spoke clearly. “Mrs. Huntington, Miles and I are practically strangers. There is nothing between us, let alone any mutual affection. As for this claim that we ‘crossed the line‘ at my birthday party–it’s completely absurd. You must be mistaken.”

Before Miles could finish, Nina cut him off.

“Miles, on the night of my party, Chase tried to assault me. There were plenty of witnesses. Immediately after that, I left the banquet hall with my family. There is no way I could have been with you. You must have mistaken someone else for me.”

Caleb stepped in, his voice dripping with ice. “You did mistake her. Plenty of people saw Chase’s attempt on Nina that night. It happened upstairs at the hotel. What, does Nina have a twin? How could she possibly have been with you at the same time?”

Miles‘ expression soured at that.

But Beatrice refused to let it go.

“Nina, if you don’t like my son, just say so,” she snapped. “But the fact remains that you two were together. Why deny it now? Miles is completely devoted to you–don’t you think you’re being incredibly heartless?”

Seeing Esther take such a hard line, Beatrice’s face darkened. She turned sharply to Miles.

“Why are you just standing there? Speak up! Tell them–did Nina spend the night with you or not?”

“I…” Miles hesitated.

For a moment, even he wasn’t sure.

He had felt off that night–dizzy and disoriented. And later, in the hotel room, the woman in the bed had even said something about him not being Nina… but he hadn’t been paying attention.

Could it be… that he really had mistaken someone else for her?
