As she listened, the color drained from her face. Whatever Oliver was saying on the other end left her paralyzed–until the phone slipped from her hand and clattered to the ground.
Miles quickly steadied her. “Mom, what’s wrong?”
“We… we’ve crossed the wrong people,” Beatrice stammered.
“What?”
Panicked, she grabbed Miles and rushed back home.
But the Huntington residence was already in total chaos.
Oliver sat slumped inside, the picture of defeat. The moment he saw Beatrice and Miles walk in, he surged to his feet and slapped Miles hard across the face.
“You idiot! Look at what you’ve done!”
“Dad! Why are you hitting me?” Miles shouted, stunned.
“Oliver! Why would you strike your own son?” Beatrice rushed over to intervene.
“Because you raised a fool!” Oliver roared. “He actually drugged the Tann girl–does he have a death wish?”
Still fuming, he kicked Miles hard.
“Because of his stupidity, I’ve managed to completely offend the Grey Group. Now look at us— the company is gone. Are you happy now?”
At the mention of the company, Miles went pale. “Is it… Jensen?”
“Who else would it be? How did I end up with a useless son like you?”
“They had no right to target us like this! That’s way out of line!” Miles said angrily. “I’m going to Jensen right now to demand an explanation!”
Oliver looked at him like he’d lost his mind.
“You?” he barked. “You think you can demand anything from him? Listen to me–you stay put and stay out of trouble. I’m the one who’s going to go and beg Jensen for mercy. That’s the only chance we have left.”

Miles‘ face turned even paler.
Beg Jensen?
He couldn’t bring himself to do that.

But one thing was certain–he had to find out who had ruined everything for him that night.
Meanwhile, at the Mercer residence, Chase returned home earlier than usual.
Katrina was already there waiting for him. Wearing an apron and a bright, almost eager smile, she even leaned down to help him with his shoes.
Chase instinctively pulled back, his brow furrowed. “What are you up to now?”
“Chase…” Katrina’s voice softened as she looked up at him. “I know I was wrong. I used to pick fights for no reason, and I finally see that now. I even made all your favorite dishes. I just want you to forgive me. Please, don’t hold the past against me.”
She looked truly pathetic. In the past, that look alone would have been enough to melt Chase’s heart–no matter what she had done, he always ended up giving in.
Now, all he felt was irritation.
He took off his own shoes and said flatly, “It’s enough that you realize you were being unreasonable.”
“I’ve really changed,” Katrina added quickly. “We’ve been together for six years; we have a child. For Wilder’s sake, I just want us to live like a real family again.”
There was a note of genuine sincerity in her voice.
For a moment, Chase felt a flicker of guilt. He had come home specifically to ask for a divorce, but he couldn’t help thinking that if she had softened like this sooner, things might never have become so tense.
“Chase, I know you love me,” Katrina continued. “And I love you, too. I wouldn’t have stayed by your side all these years if I didn’t. I don’t want Nina to be the reason our marriage falls apart
