Chase’s irritation flared. He immediately dialed Nina back, but the call went unanswered.

Worry crept in. “If anything’s happened to Nina, you’ll answer for it.”

“What could possibly happen to her? She just called to flirt with you; that’s all.”

“Enough!”

Chase glanced at the table full of food, but he had no appetite. All he wanted now was to reach Nina.

When he turned and walked out without a second glance, Katrina stomped her foot in anger. “Chase! If you walk out that door today, don’t bother coming back!”

He didn’t even respond. Outside, he kept calling Nina over and over.

Meanwhile, Nina was at the Tann residence, staring at her phone. Seeing Chase’s name flashing on the screen, she let out a cold laugh. Her earlier call had been casual, almost offhand–if Chase hadn’t answered, it meant Katrina must have seen it and cut it off.

After the third call, Nina finally picked up.

On the other end, Chase’s voice was tense. “Nina, are you okay? Did something happen?”

“No, I’m fine. Why are you calling me all of a sudden?”

“Didn’t you just call me?”

“Did I? I must’ve tapped it by accident. Sorry about that.”

Her tone was perfectly sincere. Chase relaxed a little. “It’s fine. As long as you’re okay.”

Nina didn’t respond. After a pause, Chase asked, “Are you free today? I’d like to take you out for a meal.”

“Didn’t we agree to keep our distance? Or have you already sorted things out at home?”

Chase hesitated, the words sticking in his throat, but he said it anyway. “I… I just can’t stop thinking about you.”

Nina found it repulsive, but she didn’t show it. “I ran into Katrina at the mall the other day. She was buying new sleepwear. I thought things between you two were going well.”

Chase immediately thought of the red lingerie Katrina had bought. Realizing Nina must have gotten the wrong idea, he rushed to explain, “I didn’t know about that. If I had, I definitely—”

“Alright, no need to explain,” Nina cut in. “I’ve got something to take care of. I’ll talk to you later.”

She hung up.

Looking at her phone, Nina let out a cold laugh.

So Katrina means this little to you after all, Chase.

Nina had just set her phone down when she looked up and saw Jensen standing in the doorway.

She composed herself and asked, “What are you doing here?”

“Mrs. Tann asked me to call you down for breakfast.”

“Got it.”

Nina avoided his gaze. She’d been drunk that night, and Caleb had said Jensen was the one who brought her back. When she drank, she either talked nonsense or completely forgot her manners. Not wanting to make things awkward, she moved to leave.

Jensen spoke up. “Were you just on the phone with Chase?”

“So what if I was? That’s none of your business.”

They hadn’t spoken in five years–she doubted he cared about her at all. And now he suddenly wanted to interfere?

“It’s not my business,” Jensen said evenly. “Just a friendly reminder.”

“I don’t need your ‘friendly reminder. I know exactly what I’m doing and who I choose to be around.”

With that, Nina headed downstairs.

When Esther saw her come down alone, she asked, “Where’s Jensen? Why didn’t he come with you?”
