Inside the office, Nina’s secretary, Leo Hayes, laid out all the latest work documents that needed Nina’s attention right in front of

her.

“Ms. Tann, these are all the materials you asked for,” he reported. “Mercer Group’s stock has been super unstable lately. Ever since Chase’s scandal broke out, most people have formed a bad opinion of the Mercer family. They’ve grown to hate the Mercer brand too. So following your orders, I’ve managed to win over all the investors that funded Mercer Group. They’ve said they’re willing to partner with The T Company.”

“Got it. You can leave,” Nina said.

Right after Leo walked out, Nina slid the documents over to Caleb.

“Wanna take a look?” she asked.

“Sure. Why wouldn’t I?” Caleb replied.

He opened the files. They were all The T Company’s latest net profit statements. Caleb had studied finance overseas, so he knew exactly what these reports meant.

“The T Company’s taken so much of Mercer Group’s profits?” he asked.

Most of the projects listed were ones The T Company had snatched straight from Mercer Group. To put it bluntly, Mercer Group only stayed afloat because Nina let Chase live off the scraps she left behind. It was nothing but charity.

“Chase struts around all high and mighty in public,” Nina said coolly. “But deep down, he knows he’s just picking up leave. If I hadn’t let those investors stay with him, his Mercer Group would’ve collapsed a long time ago.”

“So you’re stringing him along?” Caleb asked.

He figured out Nina’s plan fast. Keep stepping on someone forever, and they’ll just get numb and used to it. But lift them up high, then let them fall into the mud-that’s the cruelest punishment of all. Worse still, Nina kept dangling hope in front of Chase, only to snatch it away the very next second.

“I plan to let him think everything’s within easy reach,” Nina said flatly, “then strike him with a fatal blow.”

“You hate him that much?” Caleb couldn’t help asking.

How could she not hate him? Caleb didn’t know what Nina had gone through in her past life, which was why he thought she was being cruel. But Chase had been cruel to her in her past life, cruel to the Tann family too.

Over these five years, she’d met Chase again. She’d hoped he’d changed, but he was still the same as before the same fickle man. And Chase’s mom, Cecilia, was just as sharp-tongued and mean..

God had given her a second chance. She’d never let them live a good life.

“Caleb, I’ve kept The T Company’s business a secret from everyone,” Nina said. “I’ve only told you. Even most of our senior staff don’t know my real identity. Don’t blab this-if you do, we’re done for good.”

“That’s pretty harsh,” Caleb said. “But don’t worry. I’ll never tell a soul. I’ll keep this secret for you, no matter what.”

Relieved that Caleb agreed, Nina smiled.

Getting a second life, having her parents still alive, and having Caleb as her best friend standing with her through everything these were the happiest things in her life.

Just then, there was a sudden knock at the door.

“Come in,” Nina said.

Leo walked back in.

“What’s up?” Nina asked.

“Ms. Tann, Chase is here again,” he said.

This was the third time Chase had come this month. Nina had refused to see him every single time. Today, he seemed determined to stay until she agreed to meet him.

Nina pulled up the office surveillance feed on her computer. She saw Chase waiting in the first-floor lobby.

“Ms. Tann, we stole Mercer Group’s biggest investor this time,” Leo said. “Chase must be here to pick a fight. Should we find a way to turn him away?”

“No. Let him wait,” Nina said. “Make him wait for an hour. He’ll leave on his own.”

“But he’s the CEO of Mercer Group,” Leo hesitated. “Isn’t this a little rude?”

“I’m the one on top now, and he’s the one below,” Nina said sharply. “He’s the one begging for favors and asking to see me. So he has to wait. Even if I humiliate him like this, he can’t do a thing about it.”

“Yes, Ms. Tann,” Leo replied.
