Caleb stared at the security feed on the computer. “You’re ruthless,” he said. “Chase has a terrible temper. You made him wait an entire hour. Aren’t you scared he’ll storm the place?”

“Not one bit,” Nina replied, a faint smirk tugging at her lips. “He doesn’t have the guts.”

Downstairs, Chase paced anxiously. He’d already drunk six cups of water. Glancing at his watch, he saw nearly an hour had passed.

He couldn’t sit still any longer. He walked over to the lobby door and snapped at the staff, “Is your boss ever gonna show up?”

Every employee in the lobby turned to stare at him. Leo walked over just then.

“Mr. Mercer,” he said, sounding apologetic. “Our boss is in a meeting. She can’t see anyone right now.”

Chase let out a cold laugh. “Too busy… or too scared?”

For years, The T Company had gone head-to-head with Mercer Group. They targeted the exact same projects. Every time Chase planned a move, The T Company bought it out first.

Now seventy percent of the market belonged to The T Company. Twenty percent went to other firms. Mercer Group was left with a measly ten percent.

Chase had been the first to spot the real estate boom. He still couldn’t wrap his head around why The T Company always stayed one step ahead.

They’d just poached his biggest business partner. He was here to demand answers-whoever ran The T Company owed him an explanation.

“Mr. Mercer,” Leo said again, “I’m truly sorry. Our boss is swamped. Maybe you can come back another day?”

Chase had waited an hour already. Being brushed off now was the ultimate humiliation.

His face turned dark. Veins popped on his forehead. “Fine,” he snarled. “Don’t regret this. One day, you’ll be begging me for mercy!”

Chase stormed out of the building.

Back in the office, Nina watched the feed and smirked faintly.

Bold words from someone with nothing left.

What does Mercer Group even have anymore?

It barely hangs on, surviving only on the scraps I threw their way.

In her last life, she’d spent twenty years busting her back for Mercer Group. The Tann family had backed Chase nonstop. She knew bis every business move inside out.

Predicting his choices was easy.

For three years, she’d stayed one step ahead. She wanted Chase trapped in The T Company’s shadow forever.

Crushing him now would be as simple as stepping on an ant.

Meanwhile, at Mercer Group’s office, Cecilia finished dinner and prepared to bring it over to Chase.

Lucy, Chase’s new secretary-a gorgeous blonde-greeted her with a smile. “Mrs. Mercer, Mr. Mercer’s not back yet. Would you! to wait upstairs?”

“Where’s he off to in the middle of the day?” Cecilia asked. “A work event?”

“He went to The T Company to sort something out,” Lucy replied.

“The T Company-the one that’s always messing with my son?” Cecilia frowned.

Lucy nodded.

Cecilia’s tone turned sharp. “What’s it about this time?”

“Our main business partner switched to The T Company,” Lucy explained. “So Mr. Mercer went to demand an explanation.”

“How dare they?” Cecilia scowled.

She’d heard Chase complain before. The T Company’s mysterious owner never showed face and always disrespected Mercer Group.

Now they’d stolen their biggest partner.

It was an outright insult.

“I’m gonna go see who this so-called boss really is,” Cecilia said.

The Mercer name carried decades of weight in Linholt. Back when Chase’s father was alive, many people had curried favor with them.

Now some upstart company dared treat them like this?
