With that, Cecilia told her driver to head straight to The T Company.

At the front desk, the receptionist spotted the well-dressed woman in her fifties and stepped forward politely. “Ma’am, may I help you?”
“I need to see your boss,” Cecilia said flatly.
“I’m sorry, but you’ll need an appointment. Could you tell me.”
“An appointment?” Cecilia cut her off, voice sharp and loud so everyone nearby could hear. “How big do you think this little company is? Meeting someone needs an appointment?”
The receptionist looked awkward but kept her composure. “Ma’am, we’re a publicly traded firm. Our CEO’s extremely busy. No walk-ins allowed without prior notice.”
“Publicly traded, huh?” Cecilia scoffed. “Who do you think you are? Let me tell you-I’m Chase Mercer’s mother. I’ve seen more than your boss could ever dream of. Today, you get her out here. I need to talk to her face-to-face. How dare some nobody from out of town come to Linholt and act so entitled? Our family’s not easy to push around!”
The room went dead quiet. The awkward tension hung thick.
Nina and Caleb were just stepping off the elevator, ready to leave. From a distance, they saw Cecilia throwing a fit in the lobby. acting like she owned the place.
The receptionist was at a loss, and the other staff just stared at each other awkwardly.
Nina had heard every word.
Cecilia clearly thought The T Company’s CEO was just some outsider who’d moved to Linholt to start a business. She had no clue who the CEO really was.
“Now what?” Caleb whispered. “That old hag’s blocking the door. We can’t get out like this.”
“Unbelievable,” Nina muttered. “She’s really making a fool of herself here.”
She turned to Leo. “Leo, go get rid of her. Have security escort her out in front of everyone. Don’t hold back. If you can make her look bad without using foul language, even better.”
Leo was a sharp, well-educated guy. He knew exactly how to insult someone cleanly. He walked over right away.
Cecilia saw a man in a tailored suit approaching and assumed he was The T Company’s CEO. She sneered. “So you’re the one running this place? Always going up against my son?”
“Ma’am, this is Mr. Hayes, our boss’ secretary,” the receptionist corrected.
Cecilia’s face twisted into a mocking smirk. “Just a secretary? Figures. This company’s nothing special. Even your suits are cheap. Bet you don’t even make five figures a month. I’ll pay you ten grand a month. Come work for Mercer Group. My son’ll treat you well.”
Leo let out a quiet laugh. “Funny. I heard Mercer Group’s pay is garbage. Didn’t think it was only ten grand a month.”

He glanced at Lucy, standing next to Cecilia. “You look familiar. You’re Mercer Group’s new secretary, right? I’ve seen your resume. Not bad. We don’t do monthly salaries here–we do annual packages. Regular secretaries get 200 grand a year. Wanna switch?”
Lucy’s eyes lit up. The offer was way too good to pass up.
Cecilia’s face turned red with anger. “What are you doing? Trying to poach our people?”
Her yelling drew a crowd. Everyone stared. They’d heard rumors about Chase’s rude, entitled mom-and now they were seeing it firsthand.
“Poach?” Leo said calmly. “Hardly. If we wanted to, Mercer Group would’ve vanished from Linholt ages ago. Your son begged our CEO for projects not long ago. Didn’t he tell you that? Our boss practically saved your family’s business. And you come here screaming and causing a scene? That’s pretty low. Before you start yelling, maybe you should remember who you really are.”
