Realizing the man was merely a personal assistant, Chase let out an awkward laugh and pulled his hand back.

“Where is Mr. Beaumont? Hasn’t he arrived yet?” he asked.

“Mr. Beaumont is swamped with work and won’t be able to make it tonight. He sent me here to finalize this partnership on his behalf,” Felix replied.

Chase’s smile froze on his face the second he heard those words.

Guests around them started whispering among themselves. This was a major business cooperation deal. Even if the company head could not show up in person, a board member or senior manager should have come at the very least. It was basic respect for such formal negotiations, yet sending only a personal assistant felt outright dismissive.

Right then, Audrey walked in linking arms with Jensen.

Nina caught sight of them and instantly looked away coldly. Those two were the last people she wanted to see at that moment. She hated being wrongly labeled as the other woman, and it made her utterly upset.

“My brother is indeed extremely busy,” Audrey said casually, paying no heed to Chase’s disappointment. “But Jensen and I are both here. We’re here to back you up, aren’t we, Mr. Mercer?”

Chase held back his true frustration and forced a polite tone. “Halmont is quite a distance away from Linholt, so it is understandable that Mr. Beaumont cannot spare the time. Still, you are his most trusted assistant, and Ms. Beaumont is his dearest younger sister. Having you two here is already a great honor for our whole family.”

No one present was foolish enough to miss the obvious truth. The Beaumont family clearly did not take Chase seriously, and no one could tell how long this shallow partnership would

even last.

The guests lost all their earlier enthusiasm. They only exchanged polite toasts out of courtesy, and their previous eager flattery toward Chase faded away completely.

Katrina felt extremely dissatisfied watching everything unfold. She secretly regretted her

choice. She thought she would have been far better off staying by Jensen’s side instead of marrying Chase. Being with Jensen would have brought her far more status and benefits than being Mrs. Mercer ever could.

“Ms. Tann, I need to talk to you,” Audrey said and moved toward Nina.

Jensen frowned and reached out to stop her, obviously unwilling to let her get close to Nina.

Audrey shot him a soft reproachful glance. “Jensen, what’s wrong with you? I just want to have a simple chat with her. Why are you so on edge?”

Jensen stayed silent and did not respond.

“Relax, this is a formal gathering. I won’t start any trouble with her,” Audrey assured him. “I only want to apologize for what happened earlier today.”

Hearing this, Jensen finally lowered his hand and stepped aside.

Audrey walked up to Nina and gently took her hand, speaking in a sincere tone. “I truly apologize for misunderstanding your relationship with Jensen before. As women, I’m sure you get where I’m coming from. I just never wanted anyone to come between us.”

“You flatter me, Ms. Beaumont. Mr. Grey and I are barely even acquaintances, let alone anything more,” Nina responded calmly.

“I’m glad to hear that.”

Audrey picked up two glasses of sparkling wine from the nearby table and handed one to Nina. “Let me

Her words sounded warm and heartfelt. Nina accepted the wine glass. Audrey drank hers all in one go. Nina stayed cautious at first, but after sniffing her drink and finding nothing unusual, she drank it down as well.

Caleb stepped forward and cut in gently. “Alright, Ms. Beaumont, you should go spend more time with your fiancé. Nina and I are going to head over there for a look, aren’t we, Nina?”
