Caleb reached out and took Nina’s hand on his own initiative. The moment Jensen saw this, his eyes turned dark and stern.

Audrey glanced back and forth between them, looking confused. “Ms. Tann, what exactly is going on here?”

Nina had no intention of explaining anything to her, but Caleb cut in first. “You don’t need to know what our relationship is. Everyone already knows you’re Mr. Grey’s fiancée, after all. Rest easy, no one’s trying to steal your man.”

Caleb was always sharp-tongued. Faced with his pointed remarks, Audrey could only keep a polite smile and hold back her anger.

It was not until Caleb and Nina walked away that she finally let out her frustration.

“I really wonder what kind of friends Nina keeps. How could he say such things at a formal party?”

Jensen paid no heed to her complaints. He pulled his arm free from her grasp. “Since you’re here representing the Beaumont family, you ought to behave properly.”

With that, he turned and walked off in the opposite direction.

Over on the other side, Nina glanced down at their joined hands and signaled for him to let go. Caleb released her hand right away.

“I just couldn’t stand how rude Audrey was. She kept dropping hints that people thought you were the other woman. I just had to speak up for you.”

“I know you mean well, but it’s not a big deal. Let her think whatever she wants. Her thoughts don’t affect me at all.”

“How could you drink the wine she handed you? Weren’t you worried she slipped something inside it?”

“This is the Mercer Villa. She wouldn’t dare pull such tricks. I checked earlier. Those glasses of sparkling wine were picked randomly with nothing wrong with them. Besides, doing that in front of so many guests is far too reckless.”

“That’s true. It’s really hard to pull off such a trick out in the open.”

As the two talked, Chase walked straight over to them from the center of the hall.

Seeing him approach, Caleb immediately stepped forward to stand in front of Nina to shield

her.

Chase spoke in a mocking tone, “Nina, I thought you had something going on with Jensen. Turns out he still showed up clinging to his fiancée. You mean nothing to him at all. You’re only fit to hang around someone like Caleb.”

Caleb looked utterly disgusted. “Watch your mouth, Chase. Otherwise I’ll teach you a lesson and make you learn how to talk properly.”

“Don’t be so quick to side with this woman. She’s nothing but a heartbreaker who toys with men’s feelings. She strung me along before, played around with you, and even led that young man from the Huntington family on. Now she’s the one getting played by Jensen. It’s just plain karma.”

Before Caleb could fly into a rage, Nina held him back. She looked at Chase with a faint smile in her eyes. “Mr. Mercer, are you just bitter and resentful now that you can’t have me?”

“As if you’re good enough for me!” Chase sneered coldly.

“When I proposed to you, you kept stringing me along again and again. You thought your family’s status in Linholt made you some noble young lady who could toy with me however you liked. Now that we have partnered with the Beaumonts, you’re the one who can never reach our standing anymore.”

“Is that so? But it seems the Beaumonts don’t take you seriously at all. They threw such a grand dinner for this cooperation, yet only sent a single assistant to show up. It’s really quite ridiculous.”

Nina knew clearly Chase had only invited her here to show off his new status. Now that things had backfired badly, he could not stand losing face and had to speak arrogantly to save his pride. She knew his personality all too well.

His sore spot hit right on target, Chase could only let out a cold laugh. “One day, I’ll make you beg me to marry you.”

“I can promise you that day will never come. I’m actually curious what your family will do once you lose the Beaumonts’ support. Won’t you even struggle to keep your business running then?”
