“I can also take Nina out for dinner. There’s no need for you to meddle, Mr. Grey!”

“Mr. and Mrs. Tann have long wanted to meet Audrey. Sending you home happens to be on my way.”

Jensen’s words instantly fired Caleb up. He spoke sharply with obvious sarcasm, “Really? I’ve never heard them say they want to meet your fiancée. Besides, what connection does your fiancée have with the Tann family anyway? None at all, right? Didn’t she once look down on the Tanns and act like you were way out of their league?”

Caleb always spoke his mind without holding back when angry. Audrey’s gentle smile faded little by little. Nina quickly tugged at his sleeve to calm him down.

“Enough now. I’m not hungry anyway. You two go have dinner together, Mr. Grey. I’ll head back with Caleb, and my parents will feel perfectly safe with him around.”

Jensen frowned hard, his displeasure plain to see.

Audrey reached out and took Nina’s hand warmly.

“Ms. Tann, I know I was in the wrong last time, and Jensen has already scolded me properly. Let me treat you to dinner tonight as my sincere apology. If you refuse, that means you still won’t forgive me. I’ll feel guilty forever if that’s the case.”

Nina was never one to give in easily. She replied politely yet distantly, “You’re overthinking it. I already accepted your apology with that glass of sparkling wine earlier.”

“But I still feel uneasy…

“We still need to talk things over about the urban construction project.”

The moment Jensen brought up the joint investment plan with The T Company they had agreed on before, Nina’s mood shifted at once. He was clearly using the business project to pressure her.

“Fine then, let’s go.”

Nina agreed out of the blue, catching Caleb completely off guard.

He could not believe it. She gave in just because of a single construction project?

Jensen looked totally unfazed, as if he had known she would say yes all along.

“Let’s head out then. I’ve already booked a nice restaurant.”

It was already very late. Most diners had closed for the night, leaving only a handful of high- end restaurants keeping tables reserved for pre-booked guests. It was obvious Jensen had originally planned a quiet candlelit dinner with his fiancée from the start. Nina had no wish to get caught up in their messy relationship drama.

Once they got in the car, Caleb could not hold back his frustration.

“What were you thinking back there? Couldn’t you talk to me before making such sudden decisions?”

“Didn’t you hear him? He’s using that construction project to push me into agreeing.”

“So what even if he is? You’re not the type to get pushed around easily.”

“Of course I’m not.” Nina explained calmly, “I’ve made up my mind to draw a clear line and cut off all contact with him anyway. This is the perfect chance to say everything out loud. I don’t want to have to ask him out alone later, and I definitely don’t want to get cornered by his fiancée again.”

Caleb nodded in agreement. “You’re right about that.”

“Since Audrey is around these days and he brought up the project on his own, I’ll take this chance to make everything clear. He can drop the investment plan entirely. I’d rather apply for loans from the bank than take any favors from him.”

Later inside the restaurant, all four of them had already finished most of their meal.

Jensen spoke in a calm tone, “I plan to inject an extra 300 million dollars into this project.”

Nina nearly choked on the red wine she had just sipped.

Audrey knitted her brows tightly, clearly unhappy about Jensen making such a big decision without consulting her first.

Nina stared straight at him and saw he was completely serious.

“I truly appreciate your willingness to put in more funds, Mr. Grey, but I have to turn down this cooperation offer.”

Jensen’s hand paused mid-way while cutting his steak the second he heard her words.

“I’ve thought everything through carefully,” Nina went on steadily. “It was reckless of me to rush into this investment talk in the first place. I don’t want to owe you such a huge favor. I’ve

already found other investors for this project. I’m sorry, but we can call this partnership off for good.”

“I heard from my brother this project requires an enormous amount of capital,” Audrey cut in. “Which family from Linholt did you manage to get funding from?”

“That’s my private matter, so you don’t need to worry about it.”

Nina had no intention of going into details, so Audrey did not press further. She put on a polite smile and added casually, “If you’re really short on funds anytime soon, you can always come to me. I can talk my brother into lending you a hand.”
