“It’s already very late. Please don’t make this hard for me…” Kent looked at her with a helpless, pleading gaze. They had gotten acquainted these past few days, and he knew Nina had a soft heart. If he failed to send her back safely, he would surely face severe blame from Jensen.
Seeing how troubled he looked, Nina came up with a compromise. She pulled out some cash from her purse. “I’ll pay you for the ride, fine?”
“Absolutely fine!” Kent felt immense relief.
Once Nina settled into the car, he spoke up, “Ms. Tann, you’ve misunderstood Mr. Grey. He treats you well not merely out of gratitude toward your family.”
“I know. It’s also because I’m the heiress of the Tann family. He has a joint project going with my family, and he stands to gain half of all the profits. Our families’ business interests are closely tied, so he naturally won’t let anything happen to me.”
Kent could tell she held deep misunderstandings toward Jensen and could not help trying to explain. “Actually, Mr. Grey…”
A sudden phone ring cut him off.
Nina checked the unfamiliar number and realized it matched the contact Julian had given her. She answered it, only for the call to end right away. Soon after, she received a friend request message from him and accepted it without hesitation.
Glancing at her through the rearview mirror, Kent hesitated briefly before speaking. “Ms. Tann, Mr. Grey has always seen you as a close friend. How do you feel about him?”
“We were friends once, but things are different now,” Nina replied in a calm tone.
“He never reached out to me for five whole years, and never replied to any of my messages back then. A true friend would never vanish without a word and stay out of touch for so long. We have all grown up now, and those old matters no longer matter much. Now that he has a fiancée, it is only proper for me to keep my distance.”
“Have you ever thought he might have had unavoidable reasons for staying away?”
“Like what?”
“He had his own hidden troubles.”

Kent wanted to say more, yet he held back. Jensen had strictly forbidden anyone from talking about that matter, leaving him stuck in hesitation.
Nina easily guessed the truth from his reaction. “Is it that his own family stopped him from contacting me?”
Kent froze in surprise. “You already knew?”
“It is easy enough to figure out. The Greys would never allow their sole heir to stay in close contact with the family that once took him in. I understand all of this perfectly well. Still, he could have told me the truth back then instead of leaving without a single word.
“Those are all things of the past. I might have felt upset about it long ago, but I have long since let it go.”
“Ms. Tann… do you hold any affection for him at all?” Kent suddenly changed the subject.
Nina looked confused. “Affection for what?”
“I mean… do you dislike Mr. Grey now?”
“I feel neither dislike nor fondness. We are nothing more than strangers to each other.”
Kent sank into quiet sadness upon hearing her answer.
Right at that moment, bright car lights suddenly flashed from the roadside. Panicked, Kent swerved sharply and slammed on the brakes, yet it was too late. The vehicle crashed straight into a street lamp.
A powerful jolt hit Nina hard. Through her blurred vision, she watched a man step out of another car. He opened the door and slung her over his shoulder without hesitation.
She tried her best to struggle, but the man pressed a stun device against her abdomen. Her head was already spinning, and she quickly lost all consciousness completely.
