Nina had never once thought of marrying Jensen, let alone caring who would take charge of the Grey family in the end.

Yet from all she had lived through in her past life, she knew full well that the family power would eventually fall into Jensen’s hands. And Ruth, his stepmother, would end up with nothing good in the end.

“Jensen, your mother is right. You’ve gone too far this time.”

“Even if you don’t have feelings for Audrey, you ought to think of the whole family’s interests.”

“You’re the head of the Grey Group now. You can’t act

klessly just for a woman.”

Nina had never known what kind of life Jensen endured growing up in this household, but now it was laid out clearly before her eyes. Did he climb his way to the top of the group all these years while bearing such constant pressure and criticism?

“Finished?”

Jensen’s tone was icy cold, and every voice in the room died away at once.

He spoke plainly, “All of you know perfectly well how you plotted to force me into this engagement. I will never let anyone control my life. If word gets out that Audrey schemed to tie herself to our family even at the cost of her own reputation, I wonder how her family will

react.”

Ruth’s face darkened instantly. “You-”

“It was you who pushed this whole plan forward, wasn’t it, Mrs. Grey?” Jensen said sharply. “The Beaumonts will never risk ruining their own reputation to turn fully against us. But if you people are tired of living easy lives, I have enough evidence to make everything public. Once the two clans fall out completely, I won’t be the only one having a hard time.”

“Jensen Grey, how could you speak to us like this?”

“We are your elders after all!”

Are you threatening us?”

Ruth snapped coldly, “Would you really break all ties with the Beaumonts just for Nina?”

“So what if I do?”

Nina turned to glance at him in surprise. If he kept this up, he would not only alienate the powerful Beaumont family, but also lose the support of his own relatives.

“Very well. As long as I’m alive in this family, I will never let you bring this woman into our household.”

Ruth shot Nina a sharp, hostile stare, and all the other family members fixed equally unfriendly glances on her.

Jensen stepped forward to stand right in front of Nina, blocking those harsh looks. “I’m afraid you no longer hold the final say in this family now.”

His words infuriated Ruth greatly.

“We shall see who truly runs things around here!”

With that, Ruth led all the other family members away. Only then did Nina step out from behind Jensen.

“There was no need for you to go this far. Falling out with them will only bring you trouble. You could have married her anyway; feelings can grow with time.”

“I have no wish to build any affection with her.”

Jensen sounded faintly displeased as he warned her, “Stay extra cautious these days, and don’t let your guard down even after we head back to Linholt.”

“Are they going to target me?”

“Even if they try, I won’t let a single hair on your head be harmed.”

Hearing those words, Nina fell into a brief daze. He had said something almost identical to her back in their high school days.

Back then, she had only seen him as a boy she needed to look after. She had never imagined that after all these years, he would still say the same thing to protect her. And this time, strange flutters stirred quietly in her heart.

She asked him out of the blue, “Is there really nothing at all between you and Audrey?”

“The way you put it sounds like you’re hoping something did happen between us.”

“I was just asking, that’s all. I never thought such a thing.” Nina looked away quickly.

Glancing at the messy hall, Jensen told the servants, “Clean this place up thoroughly. From now on, no one is allowed to enter this house without my permission.”

“Yes, sir.”

The servants soon set about tidying up the place.

Jensen turned toward Nina. “Come upstairs with me.”

“Is there something you need, Mr. Grey?”

“I haven’t checked up on your studies these past few days. I’m going to test you right now.”
