Chapter 40 A Rumor Becomes Truth
Smack-
Nina’s hand cracked across Tara’s face.
Tara froze in disbelief. “Nina! You hit me?”
“I hit you because you can’t keep that filthy mouth of yours in check.”

Nina’s voice was ice–cold. “Did Katrina save your life or something? Why are you so desperate to defend her? Tara, I’ve put up with you more than enough, but you don’t get to slander me again and again.”
“You-”
Tears welled up in Tara’s eyes. Katrina stepped forward, placing herself in front of her. “Nina, you’ve gone too far! Tara was only stating facts–why are you lashing out and hitting people?”
Nina’s expression didn’t change. “I’m not just hitting her. I’m hitting you
too.”
Katrina’s face went pale. Nina raised her hand–but before it could come down, someone grabbed her wrist tightly.
Out of nowhere, Nina felt a powerful yank from behind, nearly wrenching her arm out of its socket.
Chase dragged her to the ground, then rushed over to Katrina, frowning. “Did she hit you?”
Katrina shook her head, though the fear was obvious on her face.
Seeing that, Chase immediately turned on Nina in anger–but the moment he got a clear look at her, the words he’d been ready to say caught in his throat.
Nina… had she really lost that much weight?
Katrina, still in his arms, was the first to notice the shift in his reaction. The thought that he might be moved by Nina, as she was now, made her uneasy. Acting quickly, she hurried over to Tara and asked with concern, “Tara, are you okay? Did she hurt you?”
Katrina’s voice snapped Chase back to himself. When he looked at Nina again, there was a sharper edge of disgust in his eyes.
“Nina, what gives you the right to hit someone?”

That was just like Chase–blindly taking Katrina’s side. No matter what she did, all it took was a show of vulnerability, and he’d soften instantly.
“If you’re going to step in, Chase, maybe you should ask what they did first.”
Her voice was icy. “I’m not someone you can push around. If anyone comes at me, I won’t hold back.”
Chase frowned, confused, and turned to Katrina and Tara. “What actually happened?”
Tara jumped in at once. “Chase, I only told her a few hard truths, and she flew into a rage and started hitting people! Katrina can back me up–I didn’t say anything wrong!”
With Chase backing her, Tara grew bolder. “Katrina saw Nina going in and out of a cosmetic surgery clinic, and we all saw Jensen picking her up and taking her home. Everything I said is true. Nina, you hit me just because I told the truth–it only proves you’ve got something to hide!”
Her words swayed the crowd even more. After all, Katrina had seen Nina visiting a cosmetic clinic, and she was known as the model student–someone who never lied. And plenty of them had seen Jensen pick Nina up themselves.
Sure enough, the look Chase gave Nina turned even colder, laced with deeper irritation. “You messed up, Nina. What right do you have to hit someone?”
