Chapter 53 There Was More To It

The moment it left his mouth, even Chase was taken aback.

He hadn’t expected that to be the thing he wanted to ask most.

Nina gave a short, annoyed laugh. “Chase, do you have nothing better to do? Do you think everyone’s like you, only caring about dating while they’re still in school?”

That was enough to set him off. “Weren’t you the one chasing after me before? Don’t act like you’re any better, Nina.”

Nina couldn’t be bothered to argue. Out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of Katrina hurrying up outside the Mercer house

Katrina lingered just beyond the gate, peering in. No one came to open the door, so she hesitated, then pulled out her phone.

Seeing that, Nina casually reached for the phone on the table.

“That’s mine,” Chase said.

“Is it? Sorry–they all look the same. I grabbed the wrong one.”

Without drawing attention, Nina flicked the phone to silent, then set it back down on the table, face down.

Resting her chin in her hand, Nina asked lightly, “So why did Mrs. Mercer leave the two of us here?”

Chase swallowed.

After the summer, Nina had changed–she was prettier, and there was something in her eyes now, a soft, captivating allure that pulled you in if you looked too long.

Realizing he’d been staring, Chase quickly looked away. “My mom just wanted me to thank you.”

“Just thank me?”

Nina had lived a lifetime already. She knew exactly what Cecilia was like–and what adults were capable of.

A carefully prepared dinner. Red wine. An excuse to leave. Locking the door on her way out.

It was obvious there was more to it.

Chase fumbled for words, unable to get anything out. It was clear he had no experience with this kind of situation. After all, he was still just a high schooler, not someone used to playing adult games.

Nina glanced toward the window. Katrina was still outside the gate, pacing and peering in, too wary to ring the doorbell, probably worried Cecilia might be home.

When Chase still didn’t speak, Nina stood up. “Nothing to say? Then I’m leaving.”

She turned to go, but Chase rushed forward and grabbed her arm.

His expression was tense. Nina looked at him. “What is it you actually want to say?”

“Nina… didn’t you always want to marry me?”

It seemed to cost him a great deal to say it. “Fine. Let’s get engaged. But I’m telling you now Katrina is the only one I lov marry you, don’t expect me to care about you”

Nina couldn’t help but laugh at how serious he looked.

Nina let out a cold laugh. “Chase, you really think too highly of yourself. I did those things because I wanted to. What does have to do with you? Stop flattering yourself.”
