Still pleased with herself, Cecilia hurried to the front door. The house was silent. She unlocked it and stepped inside.
Her smile stiffened almost immediately.
The door hadn’t been locked from the outside.
Had someone opened it from inside?
Unease crept
No answer.
in as she pushed the door wider. “Chase? Nina?” she called out, testing the air.
Her nerves tightened. She moved further in–the living room on the first floor was empty.
Without hesitation, she headed upstairs, already imagining catching them in the act.
But when she pushed open Chase’s bedroom door, what she saw froze her in place.
Chase and Katrina–clothes disheveled.
Cecilia’s face darkened. “What are you doing? Who said you could come into my house?”
She’d seen Katrina once before at school.
Katrina, exhausted, had just opened her eyes–and found Cecilia standing in the doorway.
Her face drained of color. She scrambled to pull the blanket over herself. “Mrs. Mercer… It’s not what you think!”
Chase, lying beside her, pressed a hand to his head. The effects of the alcohol–and whatever else–had worn off. He blinked at Cecilia, dazed. “Mom? You…”
“You idiot! Where’s Nina? I’m asking you–where did Nina go?”
She had left Nina and Chase alone on purpose, hoping her son would finally get somewhere with her–win her over in one move.
If Nina ended up pregnant, even better.
And even if not, once things crossed a line, the Tann family would have no choice but to let Nina marry Chase for the sake of their reputation.

But look at this.
What had her useless son done?
“Mrs. Mercer…” Katrina shrank back, trembling.
The sight of her only made Cecilia angrier. She strode forward, grabbed Katrina, and yanked her up. “You have no shame, do you? Sneaking into someone else’s house to seduce a man!”
Katrina’s face flushed with humiliation, tears pooling in her eyes.
Seeing her like that, Chase immediately pulled her into his arms. “Mom, Nina already left! I forced Katrina–it’s my fault! Don’t take it out on her!”
“You forced her?” Cecilia snapped. “Chase, do you even hear yourself? What kind of nonsense is that?”
Her frustration boiled over. “How did I end up with a son like you?”
“Chase…” Katrina hid behind him, shaken.
Chase held onto her tightly, shielding her, even as Cecilia lashed out and struck him again and again.
In the next instant, Chase shoved Cecilia aside. She staggered, nearly losing her footing.
“Mom,” Chase said coldly, “I’ll say it one more time–my girlfriend is Katrina. If you insist on keeping us apart, then I just won’t come back to this house.”
As he spoke, he draped Katrina’s clothes over her shoulders, grabbed his own uniform, and pulled her out of the bedroom.
“Chase! If you’ve got the nerve, don’t come back ever again! I’m telling you, I’ll report Katrina to the school tomorrow! I’ll make sure she gets expelled!”
Cecilia was so furious she nearly blacked out.
She had worked so hard to raise Chase, only for him to side with an outsider like this.
