The moment she saw her, Nina turned to leave, but Katrina spoke up. “Nina, I need to talk to you.”

Her tone was light, almost teasing–nothing like the soft, clingy act she used to put on.

From the slight lift of Katrina’s chin, Nina could tell she already knew about Cecilia’s visit to the school.

“Fine. What is it?” Nina said.

“Let’s go somewhere else. Too many people here.”

Katrina gestured toward the study corner nearby. Nina didn’t refuse–she was curious to see what Katrina was up to.

It was lunchtime, and the study corner was nearly empty.

“Nina, I should thank you,” Katrina said.

“For what?”

“Thanks to you, Chase and I were finally honest with each other last night.”

She put deliberate emphasis on “honest,” lifting her brows as she continued, “I’m his now. He’s already promised that after we graduate, he’ll come to my family to arrange our engagement. Once we finish college, we’ll get married.”

Hearing that all–too–familiar progression, Nina almost laughed.

In her previous life, hadn’t things gone the same way with Chase?

But life after the engagement hadn’t been anything like she’d imagined.

Nina smiled faintly. “Is that so? Then congratulations.”

She had known all along that Cecilia had tampered with that glass of red wine. Pushing Katrina forward had simply been a favor she could give along the way.

Originally, she’d planned to let Cecilia make a scene at school and get Katrina expelled. Instead, things had taken a turn, and Cecilia ended up mistaking Katrina for the Sawyer family’s daughter.

All Nina had to do was wait.

Seeing no reaction from her, Katrina assumed she was just keeping up appearances and pressed on, “Chase doesn’t love you at all. Last night, he was only playing along with you. He’s already explained everything to me–he only agreed to marry you because you won Mrs. Mercer’s favor. But this morning, Mrs. Mercer accepted me, so Nina… you’re out.”

Seeing the smug look on Katrina’s face, Nina couldn’t help but laugh.

“Nina! Chase and I truly love each other! I know you love him too, but love can’t be forced! Mrs. Mercer has already accepted me–please stop trying to make Chase marry you, okay?”

Her voice drew the attention of passing students.

Seeing the scene, Chase rushed over, pulled Katrina up from the floor, and shielded her behind him.

“Nina! You’ve gone too far!”

He shoved Nina aside, his eyes filled with undisguised disgust.

The memory of last night–of Nina setting things up to drive a wedge between him and Katrina–darkened his expression even further.

“I’ve told you before, marrying you was just my mom’s idea. The one I love is Katrina! Stay away from my mom and stop trying to win her favor. I will never marry you!”
