Hunter nudged him lightly and muttered under his breath, “I’ve got this. Why are you stepping
in?”
“That’s my business,” Jensen replied evenly. “You don’t need to take the fall for me.”
Hunter looked at his stubborn expression and, without another word, shut up.
Bruce looked at Jensen, held back a sigh, and finally said, “Both of you–come with me to the office.”
Just as he was about to leave, Nina spoke up. “Mr. Kent, this isn’t our fault. Chase and Katrina were the ones bullying people first.”
Bruce paused. When he turned and saw it was Nina, his expression softened a little.
After all, both Nina and Jensen ranked in the top five in their grade and had excellent records. Bruce tended to give good students a bit more leeway.
He shifted his gaze to Chase and Katrina.
Seeing that they were still holding hands, his frown deepened. Facing these two once top- performing students, he steadied himself and said coldly, “You two–come to the office as well.”
Chase and Katrina’s expressions changed.
Nina couldn’t keep Jensen and Hunter from being punished, but at least she could drag Chase and Katrina into it with them.
Inside the office, Bruce looked at the five of them and asked, “All right, who threw the punch?”
“I did!” Hunter said loudly.
A moment later, Jensen added, “Mr. Kent, it was me.”
Bruce pressed his temples, already getting a headache. “So which is it?”
Nina stepped forward. “Mr. Kent, it was Jensen–not Hunter.”
Jensen pressed his lips together but didn’t argue.
“But Jensen had a reason for hitting Chase,” Nina continued.

Bruce frowned. “There’s no reason that justifies hitting someone.”

“But Chase was the one who started it,” Nina said. “If there’s going to be punishment, shouldn’t he take full responsibility?”
Katrina immediately cut in. “That’s not true! Chase didn’t hit anyone!”
“He did,” Nina said evenly. “Just not with his fists–with his words.”
The teachers in the office looked momentarily confused.
Nina continued, enunciating clearly so everyone could follow. “It started when Katrina had a classmate call me out. She bragged in front of me about what happened between her and Chase last night, and about how he plans to marry her after graduation. I didn’t want to hear it, so I wished them well and left. The moment I turned away, Katrina suddenly dropped to her knees, grabbed me, and begged me not to force Chase to marry me…”
Nina knew exactly how embarrassing it would be for a senior to have something like that said out loud in front of teachers.
