What she had endured in her past life… the tragic deaths of her two children, the destruction of the Tann family, her parents‘ car accident-
Every last bit of it, she would make Chase and Katrina pay for.
That evening, Chase stood outside the Mercer house, hesitating to go in. He hadn’t come home at all the night before. With Cecilia’s temper, he was sure he’d be in for a scolding.
Just as he finally worked up the nerve to open the door, it swung open from the inside. Cecilia greeted him with a bright smile. “Chase, you’re back! Go wash your hands–dinner’s ready.”
He froze, caught off guard. He hadn’t expected her to cook for him.
The table was covered with a lavish spread, which only confused him more. Cecilia went on, “In a few days, bring your girlfriend over so I can meet her. I felt a bit bad about how I treated her last night.”
Chase frowned. “Mom… you’re not against me being with Katrina anymore?”
“Silly boy. Why would I object to my son dating?” Cecilia said cheerfully. “I do think things are moving a bit fast, but you’re both adults–you’ll take responsibility for your choices. Katrina seems like a good girl. Hold on to her. In the future, you can bring her into the family and I’d love to have a healthy little grandson to spoil.”
The more she talked, the more excited she sounded, while Chase’s frown deepened.
“Mom, are you serious?”
“Of course I am! I’ve always liked Nina, too, but since you’re already with Katrina, I’m not going to stand in your way.”
Her sudden change left Chase completely baffled.
Cecilia continued, still in high spirits, “In a few days, it’ll be your eighteenth birthday. I’ve arranged a party for you at The Grand Sovereign. Make sure you invite Katrina and your friends.”
Meanwhile, at the Tann house-
“A birthday party?”

Marvin and Esther handed her the invitation Cecilia had sent over earlier that day. After a brief pause, Marvin said, “It says you’re invited. Whether you go or not is up to you–we’ll support whatever you decide.”
“I feel the same,” Esther added.
Nina looked at her parents, their concern obvious, and smiled. “It’s just a birthday party. It’s not a big deal. You’re worrying too much.”
Esther sighed. “We’re just afraid you might go soft. The Mercer family has always wanted you as their daughter–in–law.”
“Don’t worry,” Nina said calmly. “This time, Mrs. Mercer probably doesn’t want me as her daughter–in–law anymore.”
Marvin and Esther exchanged confused looks. They didn’t understand, but Nina did.
Cecilia was deeply vain. The only reason she had humbled herself before the Tann family was because she and her son needed their help. Back then, she had tried so hard to get Nina to marry into the Mercer family, but Nina had refused.
Now, believing she had secured the backing of the Sawyer family and gotten past her current difficulties, Cecilia was eager to show off in front of her.
Holding such a grand party at The Grand Sovereign wasn’t just for Chase’s birthday–it was meant as a statement. A way to tell Nina she had been foolish to turn down the Mercer family, that someone better was now worthy of Chase.
That kind of shallow display was nothing short of contemptible.
Nina clearly remembered Chase’s eighteenth birthday in her previous life. Cecilia had thrown an equally lavish party at The Grand Sovereign to announce Chase and Nina’s engagement. In the end, though, it had turned into quite a spectacle.
