Chapter 63 A Clothing Store

Chase glanced at Nina and said coldly, “Whether she comes or not is up to her.”
With that, he led Katrina out of the classroom.
Nina felt the mocking looks around her, but only smiled.
Let them laugh. On the day of the party, they might not find anything to laugh about.

On Saturday, Esther had Nina sent to a boutique early in the morning to pick up her dress.
She’d gone out of her way to have a gown custom–made through a friend overseas, determined not to let the Mercer family look down on Nina at the party.
Nina had never cared much about clothes before. Back when she was heavier, comfort and durability were all that mattered, and brands meant nothing to her. But after everything she’d gone through in her previous life, she’d spent years moving in high society. Even though she had never worked as Mrs. Mercer, she’d still had to accompany Chase to countless social events and deal with wealthy socialites. Over time, she’d come to recognize quite a few luxury brands.
Among the elite, beyond the top–tier labels, people often favored private custom pieces- some even made exclusively for foreign royalty, the kind of things money alone couldn’t always buy.
The Tann family held a high status in Linholt, and Nina’s mother had been a well–known socialite before marriage. Esther knew the landscape well and had her connections.
Before long, the car pulled up beside an unassuming glass storefront in the city center.
As Nina stepped out, her eyes caught the logo above the entrance. Unlike typical boutiques, the display window held no clothing–only carefully arranged flowers. The door was closed, and the place looked like it rarely welcomed walk–ins. Anyone passing by might not even realize it was a clothing store.
Even so, Nina could tell right away this place was anything but ordinary.
It sat in the heart of downtown, right next to the busiest shopping district. Just the rent alone would run into six figures a month. Not just anyone could afford to open a standalone boutique here.
She pushed the door open. A soft chime rang out, and a well–dressed sales associate stepped out from the back.

“Ms. Tann?” Sloane asked gently.
Nina nodded. “That’s me.”

“Your gown arrived this morning and hasn’t been unboxed yet. We’ve prepared a private fitting room for you. If anything doesn’t fit perfectly, our tailor can make adjustments on the spot.”
As she spoke, Sloane placed a pair of slippers in front of Nina.
They were brand new, bearing the logo of a luxury brand that sold for thousands.
Nina slipped them on without hesitation and followed her inside.
Outside the boutique, Tara had just come out of the mall next door with Katrina. The two of them had each spent over a thousand dollars on brand–name dresses.
Tara was the first to spot Nina inside, following Sloane toward the back. She nudged Katrina right away. “Katrina, look- isn’t that Nina?”
Katrina glanced in and caught only a glimpse of Nina’s back.
“Come on, let’s see what she’s doing,” Tara said, already pulling her toward the door.
The moment they stepped inside, a faint, elegant fragrance greeted them. The shop was quiet -no music, no chatter–which made their sudden entrance feel even more out of place.
Sloane quickly appeared. Seeing that they had already stepped onto the wooden floor, she frowned slightly, then asked, “Do you have an appointment?”
“An appointment?” Tara frowned. “You need one for a place like this?”
“We require bookings at least three days in advance. May I ask—”
Tara cut her off, annoyed. “But I just saw Nina walk in. Did she book three days ahead?”
“Tara…” Katrina tugged at her sleeve. Even if she wasn’t used to places like this, it was obvious the boutique was high–end. Making a scene like this felt embarrassing.
